Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed which are capable of being used to determine filtration efficiency of a filter body even in a clean state. One or more embodiments of the disclosure are directed to methods of determining a filtration efficiency of a filter comprised of a porous wall portion, the filter having a longitudinal axis extending from an inlet end (202) to an outlet end (204), and an out peripheral portion extending parallel to the longitudinal axis and surrounding the porous wall portion, the method comprising: sealing the outer peripheral portion, forcing an inlet flow comprised of a gas flow into the inlet end (202) of the filter at a set flow rate, introducing particles such as smoke particles into the inlet flow, and optically counting the number of particles entering and exiting the filter during a sampling event, such as with diffraction based optical particles counters positioned upstream and downstream of the filter.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed which apply inorganic particles to a plugged honeycomb body comprising porous walls, an inlet end and an outlet end. The apparatus comprises a Venturi tube through which the particles flow into a duct system. Filtration articles comprise: a plugged honeycomb body; inorganic deposits disposed within the plugged honeycomb filter body having a porosity in a range of greater than 95% to less than or equal to 99.9% and an average thickness in a range of greater than or equal to 0.5μm to less than or equal to 50μm; and a clean filtration efficiency of greater than or equal to 85% as measured by a smoke filtration efficiency test.

The inorganic deposits are comprised of refractory inorganic nanoparticles bound by a high temperature binder comprising one or more inorganic components. At least a portion of the inorganic deposits form a porous inorganic network over portions of inlet walls of the honeycomb filter body.

Abstract: A method for applying a surface treatment to a plugged honeycomb body comprising porous wall includes: mixing particles of an inorganic material with a liquid vehicle and a binder material to form a liquid-particulate-binder stream; mixing the liquid-particulate-binder stream with an atomizing gas, directing the liquid-particulate-binder stream into an atomizing nozzle thereby atomizing the particles into liquid-particulate-binder droplets comprised of the liquid vehicle, he binder material, and the particles; conveying the droplets toward the plugged honeycomb body by a gaseous carrier stream, wherein the gaseous carrier stream comprises a carrier gas and the atomizing gas; evaporating substantially all of the liquid vehicle from the droplets to form agglomerates comprised of the particles and the binder material; depositing the agglomerates onto the porous walls of the plugged honeycomb body; wherein the deposited agglomerates are disposed on, or in, or both on and in, the porous walls.

Abstract: A honeycomb body having a porous ceramic honeycomb structure with a first end, a second end, and a plurality of walls having wall surfaces defining a plurality of inner channels. A highly porous layer is disposed on one or more of the wall surfaces of the honeycomb body. The highly porous layer has a porosity greater than 90%, and has an average thickness of greater than or equal to 0.5 μιη and less than or equal to 10 μιη. A method of making a honeycomb body includes depositing a layer precursor on a ceramic honeycomb body and binding the layer precursor to the ceramic honeycomb body to form the highly porous layer.
