In some embodiments, a plenum of an apparatus for transferring energy between a rotating element and a fluid may include a through hole disposed through the plenum; a plurality of inlet guide vanes disposed proximate a peripheral edge of the through hole, the plurality of inlet guide vanes comprising a first group of inlet guide vanes having a symmetrical profile, a second group of inlet guide vanes, and a third group of inlet guide vanes, wherein each inlet guide vane of the second group and third group have a cambered profile, and wherein each inlet guide vane of the third group has a different cambered profile from each other inlet guide vane of the third group.

A system and method for compressing and expanding air in a compressed air energy storage (CAES) system is disclosed. A CAES system is provided that is alternately operable in a compression mode and an expansion mode and includes therein a motor-generator unit and a drive shaft connected to the motor-generator unit that is configured to transmit rotational power to and from the motor-generator unit. The CAES system also includes at least one reversible compressor-expander unit coupled to the drive shaft and configured to selectively compress and expand air, and an air storage unit connected to the reversible compressor-expander unit and configured to store compressed air received therefrom, with the at least one reversible compressor-expander unit compressing air during the compression mode and expanding air during the expansion mode.

An additive manufacturing (AM) system (10) includes a housing (18) defining a chamber (20) and a build platform (22) disposed in a lower portion (82) of the chamber. The AM system includes an upper gas inlet (44) disposed in a side-wall (50) and in an upper portion (42) of the chamber and configured to supply an upper gas flow (46) parallel to the build platform. The AM system includes a lower gas inlet (84) in the lower portion of the chamber, wherein the lower gas inlet includes one or more pairs of dividing walls (90, 92, 142, 146, 150) extending from the side-wall toward the build platform and configured to guide the lower gas flow at one or more flow angles (120, 145, 149, 153) with respect to the build platform. The AM system includes at least one gas delivery mechanisms (74, 106) to regulate flow characteristics of the upper and lower gas flows, and includes a gas outlet (108) to discharge the upper and lower gas flows from the chamber.

In some embodiments, a plenum of an apparatus for transferring energy between a rotating element and a fluid may include a through hole disposed through the plenum; and a plurality of inlet guide vanes disposed proximate a peripheral edge of the through hole, the plurality of inlet guide vanes comprising a first group of inlet guide vanes having a cambered profile and a second group of inlet guide vanes disposed radially inward of the first group of inlet guide vanes, wherein the first group of inlet guide vanes are in a fixed position with respect to the plenum and the second group of inlet guide vanes are movable with respect to the plenum.
