Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating a power distribution system circuit breaker is provided (figure 1). The circuit breaker includes an associated node electronics unit (20) wherein a node electronics unit (20) redundancy requirement is predetermined. The method includes monitoring electrical system parameters associated with the circuit breaker (16) with the node electronics unit (20), communicating the electrical system parameters over a digital network (22) to at least one central control processing unit (24), receiving commands and actions from the at least one central control processing unit (24) over the digital network (22), determining circuit breaker (16) actuation commands based at least partially on the received commands and actions, and operating the circuit breaker (16) based on the circuit breaker (16) actuation commands.

Abstract: A protection system for a power distribution system is provided (figure 1). The protection system includes a central computer (28), a plurality of data modules (30), and a data network (32). The data modules (30) are each in communication with a different circuit breaker (14) of the power distribution system. The data network (32) communicates between the central computer (28) and the plurality of data modules (30). The central computer (28) sends an instruction to the plurality of data modules (30) over the data network (32) to aid in synchronization of sampling of a power condition at the plurality of data modules (30).
