Abstract: The invention relates to a method for making an N -substituted D-mannosamine derivative of the following formula 1 and its salts wherein R 1 is a non-electron-withdrawing group,and wherein R 2 is -OH or R 2 is –NHR 3 wherein R 3 is a group removable by hydrogenolysis; by epimerizingan N -substituted D-glucosamine derivative of the following formula 2 wherein R 1 and R 2 are as defined above.
