An antenna having an array structure for full-duplex communication on a same wireless resource is provided, as well a network element including such an antenna and a beamforming processor. A method for transmitting and receiving simultaneously on a same wireless resource using such an antenna is also provided. The antenna includes multiple transmit antenna elements, each of these elements coupled to a respective gain- controlled transmit amplifier. The antenna also includes multiple receive antenna elements, each of these elements coupled to a respective gain-controlled receive amplifier. The antenna also includes an electromagnetic isolation structure located between the plurality of transmit antenna elements and the plurality of receive antenna elements.

System and methods are disclosed in which an uplink frame is configured to accommodate each, some, or all of the following types of access: (1) demand assigned access in which a UE requests resources and is then granted a partition of resources of the uplink frame; (2) free assigned access in which one or more UEs are granted a partition of resources of the uplink frame without UEs requesting the grant of the resources; and (3) random access in which a partition of resources of the frame are used by UEs for random access communication. The frame may be configurable on a semi-static or dynamic basis. In this way, the base station may be able to better accommodate UEs having different traffic characteristics and/or different latency requirements.
Abstract:
A method for two stage communication is provided together with an apparatus for performing the method. The method receives channel state information (CSI) for a wireless resource. The CSI is processed to identify first and second time-varying characteristics of a wireless resource. First and second transmit matrices are configured based on the first and second time-varying characteristics, respectively. A signal for transmission by a plurality of transmit antenna elements is then generated by applying the first and second transmit matrices to symbols of a data stream for transmission. Optionally, first and second receive matrices are also generated for processing signals received from a plurality of receive antenna elements. In some cases, the method may mitigate self-interference between transmitted and received signals on the wireless resource.

Methods for transmitting over a wireless channel from a plurality of transmit chains are provided, as well as apparatuses for performing the methods. Each transmit chain has a variable gain power amplifier coupled to an antenna element. A subset of at least two transmit chains is selected from the plurality of transmit chains. A gain of at least one of the variable gain power amplifiers is set in accordance with the modulation scheme. Respective beams are transmitted with each transmit chain in the subset. Each respective beam represents a component of a modulated signal according to a modulation scheme, so that the beams combine over the wireless channel to form the modulated signal.
