What is described herein is a neutral pH, VOC-free biocidal composition of 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one which is stable at low temperatures for an extended period of time. The compositions are particularly advantageous in use in protecting latex, paint, coating, cosmetic and personal care formulations against microbiological spoilage.

Provided are multifunctional polymers comprising at least one anhydride repeating unit with at least one pseudo-cationic moiety graft and at least one hydrophobic graft. The grafting functionalizations can occur before, during, or after polymerizing the monomer(s). The anhydride employed may be partially or fully opened to provide amic acids, carboxylic acids, carboxylic acidic salts, imides, esters, and mixtures thereof. The polymers also may comprise other repeating units, including, but not limited to, alpha-olefins. In one embodiment the polymers exhibit antimicrobial activity, and can be employed in a wide variety of compositions, including those where antimicrobial activity is useful. A method of providing microbial activity also is provided.

A stabilized biocidal dispersion comprising a biocide coated or adsorbed onto stable sub-micron carrier particles and wherein sub-micronized particles are stabilized by additives having polar moieties, hydrophobic and hydrophilic segments. The sub-micron particles are selected from metal oxides like zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, cerium dioxide and silica, alumina, minerals, clays, stilbene and sub-micron carbons. Exemplary biocides include carbamates, isothiazolones, pyrithione chelates and/or trizoles. Also disclosed is a process for preparing stabilized sub- micronized carrier particles.

The iodo-derived hydrophobic biocide forms a complex with the inert carrier and the hydrolysis-sensitive biocide that is dispersible in water. What is described herein is a synergistic preservative composition capable of providing broad spectrum antimicrobial activity comprising: (i) about 0.1 wt . % to about 99.9 wt. % of propylene carbonate; (ii) about 0.1 wt . % to about 99.9 wt. % of one or more organic compounds, and wherein, inclusion of each additional organic compound is capable of demonstrating cumulative synergistic effect; and (iii) optionally about 0.1 wt . % to 99.0 wt . % of one or more preservative compounds, and wherein, inclusion of each preservative compound is capable of demonstrating cumulative synergistic effect, wherein the Synergy Index (SI) value of the total composition is from about 0.05 to about 0.95. Also described is a process for preparing said composition and method of use of the same.
