Abstract:
Disposable liquid absorbent mats are described. The mats generally include at least a liquid absorbent layer and a liquid impervious layer. The liquid absorbent layer may be made from a tissue web, a hydroentangled web, an airlaid web, a coform web, and the like. The liquid impervious layer, on the other hand, may comprise a meltspun web, a film, a hydroentangled web, or even a tissue web that has been treated with a sizing agent that renders the web resistant to fluid flow. In one embodiment, the mats can be made so as to have a relatively low caliper so that the mats can be spirally wound into a roll. In other embodiments, however, the mats may be packaged in a stacked arrangement. The mats have various uses and applications. For instance, the mats are well suited for use during food preparation. The mats are well suited to absorbing fluids while preventing the fluids from striking through the product. In some embodiments, the mats are also well suited to serve as an absorbent and cut resistant surface. An added benefit is the addition of a layer of polymer to the bottom side of the film to achieve non-slip feature to an absorbent and cut resistant food prep mat.

A multiple mode headbox (10) is provided including a support surface (16), two or more chambers (22), and an adjustable roof (30). Each chamber includes a plurality of nozzles (24) adapted to optionally supply papermaking fibers to the support surface. The adjustable roof is operably configured to adjust over a range of movement such that it defines a forming zone (14) between the support surface and at least one chamber in a first mode, and between said support surface and at least one different said chamber in a second mode.

A process for treating a fibrous material which includes the steps of: 1) providing a liquid suspension composed of fibrous material; 2) intermixing the liquid suspension of fibrous material with a treatment over a time period T1 - wherein the treatment requires a period of time TR sufficient to treat the fibrous material; 3) depositing the liquid suspension of fibrous material and intermixed treatment onto a forming surface to form a layer and removing a substantial portion of the liquid, over a period of time T2; and 4) applying pressurized jets of a liquid to the layer of fibrous material to wash unused treatment from the fibrous material within a period of time T3. Periods of time T1, T2 and T3 are immediately consecutive and amount to a total period of time at least as great as TR. Also disclosed is a hydraulically entangled structure composed of: 1) at least one layer of a wet-laid nonwoven web containing fibrous cellulosic material; and 2) colorfast dye imparting color to the fibrous cellulosic material such that the fibrous cellulosic material is colorfast.
Abstract:
A flame retardant composition for treating a high pulp content nonwoven web is provided. The flame retardant composition includes soluble solids formed from inorganic salts, such as ammonium polyphosphate and sulfur. The TGA range of such soluble solids is from about 175 DEG C to about 370 DEG C. The flame retardant composition may be continuously and uniformly applied to the high pulp content nonwoven web by a non-compressive process.
Abstract:
The present invention provides for a nonwoven web composite which contains at least 40% by weight of post consumer recycled materials. It has been surprisingly discovered that a nonwoven web composite of the present invention, with its fairly high post consumer recycled material content, has physical properties similar to those of a nonwoven web composite prepared from virgin materials.

A three-dimensional hydraulically entangled nonwoven composite structure made of nonwoven fibrous web and a fibrous material integrated in the nonwoven fibrous web by hydraulic entanglement is disclosed. The nonwoven composite structure has a greater ability to maintain an embossed pattern when wet and has the ability for the structure to recover after it has been compressed, to a greater degree than previously found. Also disclosed is a method of making an embossed hydraulically entangled nonwoven composite fabric.

A composite fabric is provided that contains staple fibers hydraulically entangled with a nonwoven web formed from continuous filaments. A portion of the staple fibers is entangled with the web, while another portion protrudes through the web. The resulting surface topography has one surface with a preponderance of the smooth, staple fibers, and another surface with a preponderance of the continuous filaments from the nonwoven web, but also including some of the protruded smooth, staple fibers. Thus, each surface contains smooth staple fibers and is soft.
