Abstract:
In a communication system in which a gateway entity is linked to a plurality of infrastructure entities which in turn are operable to communicate with an access terminal, the access terminal needs first to establish a data attachment point (DAP) with one of the infrastructure entities. Handoff of the DAP from one infrastructure entity to another infrastructure entity is initiated by the access terminal. The access terminal weighs factors such as the link conditions with the various infrastructure entities, the time since the last DAP handoff, and time duration communicating with the current infrastructure entity before proceeding with the DAP handoff.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus are presented for implementing an improved Control-Hold Mode that reduces the load of the reverse link and reduces the battery consumption of remote stations. While a remote station is in the improved Control-Hold Mode, the circuitry that monitors the forward packet data channels and the associated control channels are turned off. Since the forward packet data channels and their associated control channels are not monitored, the operations of the reverse channels can be gated off to predetermined duty cycles, or set on intermittent transmission modes, or shut down completely. Transitions from the Control-Hold Mode to the Active Mode can be initiated by the remote station or by a base station. When a transition is initiated by a remote station, the remote station transmits a signaling message to a serving base station (400) and then starts operating the feedback channels before actually receiving forward link signals (410).
Abstract:
A method and apparatus are disclosed for negotiating and managing one or more personalities (A-D) in a wireless communications system (400). The method comprises advertising one or more supported initial protocol set identifiers. Furthermore, the method comprises selecting a starting initial protocol set identifier from the advertised initial protocol set identifiers. In addition, the method comprises establishing a session based on the selected starting initial protocol set identifier. The method also comprises establishing a connection between an access terminal (420) and an access network (ANl, AN2,...,ANN) based on the selected initial protocol set identifier.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for detection and selection of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) service. A cellular network may provide an advertisement for a WLAN, such as in an overhead signaling message. The advertisement may identify the Access Point(s) by an Extended Service Set Identifier (ESSID). The remote station may then scan for the WLAN service automatically or manually.
Abstract:
A method and a system for providing signaling in cellular telephone system providing broadcast services to fully integrate broadcast services with the services provided by the cellular telephone systems. The signaling method coordinate interaction between an access network and the subscriber station to allowing the subscriber station to decode the broadcast service, to receive paging messages while receiving the broadcast service, to properly transition between operation states, and other functions known to one of ordinary skill in the art.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for detection and selection of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) service. A remote station, which may be in conjunction with a wireless computing device, may scan for a cellular paging indicator and a WLAN beacon using one or two tuners. When WLAN coverage is available, a packet data session may be transferred thereto.
Abstract:
Techniques for transmitting and receiving segmented broadcast messages to improve performance. At a transmitter, a broadcast message to be transmitted over a wireless channel is partitioned into a number of segments and a header is formed for each segment. Each segment header may include (1) a sequence number, (2) a first segment indicator, and/or (3) a last segment indicator. A segmented broadcast message is generated with the segments and their headers, and is transmitted multiple times to improve reliability. At a receiver, one or more message repetitions are received for the segmented broadcast message. Each received message repetition is processed to recover good segments, if any, for the broadcast message. The good segments from the received message repetition(s) are then combined to recover the broadcast message. The processing may terminate whenever all segments of the broadcast message have been recovered.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for providing short-slot-cycle paging information from a communication device (CD) to a base station (BS) includes receiving system parameter messages from the BS, determining whether the BS is capable of short-slot-cycle paging, and indicating that the CD is also capable for short-slot-cycle paging if the BS is determined to be capable of short-slot-cycle paging. A method in a BS for providing short-slot-cycle paging includes indicating to a CD that the BS is capable of short-slot-cycle paging, receiving information from the CD, indicating that the CD is also capable for short-slot-cycle paging, and paging the CD based on the received information.
Abstract:
A method for managing a point-to-point call initiated (702) between a wireless mobile station (114, 400) and a remote party while the mobile is receiving broadcast content via one or more multi-user forward-link broadcast channels (508). The mobile station notifies (704) the network (110) of preferences as to prescribed categories of operating conditions, such as whether to continue receiving the broadcast content, and election between the point-to-point call and the broadcast content should network resources be unable to conduct the point-to-point call and broadcast content concurrently. In accordance with the preferences, communications are conducted (706) in one of the following operating modes: (1) conducting the point-to-point call and discontinuing reception of the broadcast, (2) conducting the point-to-point call and continuing reception of the broadcast, (3) aborting completion of the point-to-point call and continuing reception of the broadcast.
Abstract:
In a communication system (100), a method and apparatus provide for efficient control of call requests from mobile stations (102-104) to base station (101). Mobile station (102-104) receives an initial call request block probability from base station (101), determines an elapsed time from an effective time of the initial call request block probability, and adjusts the initial call request block probability based on an elapsed time. Mobile station (102-104 ) uses the adjusted initial call request to block call request.
