    Abstract: Method of manufacturing a dome comprising: providing a plurality of components; joining a first and a second component together, joining the first and second components together comprising: positioning the first component and the second component in an inital position in which the first surfaces of components are angled from each other by a first angle; melting a volume of material extending between the first and the second component, the volume of material increasing in thickness from the second surfaces to the first surfaces; and the volume of material cooling and solidifying so as to join the first component and the second component together, the cooling of the volume of material reducing the angle between the first surfaces to a second angle less than the first angle such that the first surfaces face towards a centre of the dome and the first and second components form part of the dome.

    Abstract: The present invention is concerned with a method of discriminating between, in a surface of a transition metal alloy, transition metals in different oxidation states using surface sensor molecules adapted to associate selectively with one of the transition metals. In particular, the present invention provides a method of identifying degradation in aircraft components such as turbine blades, engine casings and aerofoils. In embodiments, a surface sensor molecule comprising an oxidation state discriminating group, such as an imidazole, and a fluorescein probe is applied in aqueous solution to the surface of a service-run Ni alloy aircraft component. The sensor molecule selectively associates with transition metals in oxidation states greater than zero such that fluorescence imaging can be used to identify areas of degradation.

    Abstract: A surface treatment device (16) comprises an enclosure (18) which has an opening (20) through which the leading edge (14) of an aerofoil (12) passes. A sealing element (26) is provided on the enclosure (18) to seal the device (16) to the surfaces (11, 13, 14) of the aerofoil (12). An abrasive is located within the enclosure (18) and two fluid openings (32) are also provided through which a chemical accelerant can be pumped. In operation the enclosure (18) is oscillated relative to the component (12) so that material is abraded. Whilst the enclosure (18) is oscillated a chemical accelerant is simultaneously pumped through it. The device (16) allows for the local application of a surface treatment on a component.
