A method and system for generating a physical identifier in a storage device that includes a plurality of storage regions is provided. The method includes determining a number of reference storage regions for uniquely identifying the storage device; comparing the number of reference storage regions to a threshold; generating auxiliary storage regions for uniquely identifying the storage device, such that a number of the auxiliary storage regions corresponds to a result of the comparison; generating location distribution information of the reference storage regions and auxiliary storage regions; and storing the location distribution information in the storage device.

According to the present invention, a method for the authentication, by a host device, of a storage device having a plurality of unit storage areas comprises the following steps: acquiring information on the distribution of locations of reference defective areas to be used for uniquely identifying the storage device; sampling the unit storage areas of the storage device; identifying the distribution of locations of physically defective areas among the sampled areas; determining the similarity between the acquired distribution of locations and the identified distribution of locations; and authenticating the storage device in accordance with the result of the determination.

An information storage medium (a disc) includes an area and a user data area. The area includes a recordable zone having a drive & disc zone in which information on a drive and information on a state of the disc are recorded. The drive & disc zone includes a plurality of physical clusters or ECC blocks and the information on the drive and the information on the state of the disc are recorded in the same physical cluster or ECC block or different physical clusters or ECC blocks.

The present invention relates to an information storage medium having a plurality of recording layers, to a record reproduction method, and to a record reproduction apparatus. According to the present invention, the information storage medium has a plurality of recording layers, wherein each of the recording layers has an inner circumferential area and a data area. At least one of the plurality of recording layers has, in the inner circumferential area thereof, a temporary defect management area for recording information on defects detected in the data area. The size of the temporary defect management area in the upper layers is larger than that of the temporary defect management area in the lower layers.

OPC (Optical Power Control) areas are efficiently arranged on an information storage medium with at least three layers according to the present invention so that data records of another layer are smoothly reproduced, reducing the influence of OPC operation during record reproduction. The information storage medium comprises at least three recording layers according to the present invention. Each recording layer comprises at least one OPC area. No OPC area of each recording layer overlaps with adjacent layers around a radius.
