The object of the invention is a liquid packaging board (1), wherein the base board (3) is provided with at least one polymeric coating layer on both sides thereof to decrease the flavour scalping from a packaged liquid, such as citrus fruit juice. Inside the baseboard, there is a layer (6) of ethylene methyl acrylate copolymer either in a direct contact with the packaged liquid or coated with a thin layer of polyolefin. The invention also relates to a closed package for liquid food that is formed from the liquid packaging board (1) by folding and seaming, wherein the side that comes in contact with the food product, correspondingly, comprises an EMA layer and, possibly, a thin polyolefin layer on top of the same. The invention further comprises the use of EMA in decreasing the flavour scalping from the packaged liquid by the packaging material.

The invention relates to a polymer-coated heat-sealable packaging material, its manufacturing method and a sealed package manufactured thereof. The material comprises a fibre base (3), which is a packaging paper or packaging board, an outer polymeric heat sealing layer (1, 8), which is, for example, LDPE, and an inner polymeric water vapour barrier layer (2, 7), which according to the invention is partly or totally formed of cycloolefin copolymer (COC). The COC water vapour barrier and the heat sealing layers are brought onto the fibre base by extrusion, and they can be placed on one side or on both sides of the fibre base for achieving a moisture barrier on both sides of the package. Also polymeric oxygen barrier layers, such as EVOH or polyamide layers can be incorporated in the packaging material. COC is amorphous, and by using it as an extruded water vapour barrier layer, curling of the packaging material is prevented. The packages according to the invention comprise carton, box and bag packages for dry and liquid foods.

The invention relates to a method for improving the heat sealability of a packaging material and a method for manufacturing a heat-sealed container or package. The material can be polymer-coated packaging paper or cardboard, or a polymeric packaging film. According to the invention, the material includes a polymer layer that contains polyester, particularly polylactide, the heat sealability of which is improved by ultraviolet radiation. Polylactide is useful as such or when blended, for example, with other biodegradable polyester. The containers and packages manufactured according to the invention include disposable drinking cups and cardboard carton and box packages.

The invention relates to a manufacturing method of a heat-sealable packaging mate-rial, a polymer-coated packaging material manufactured using the method, and a sealed package to be manufactured of the material. The packaging material comprises a fibre substrate (1 ), an inner polymeric coating layer (2) against the same, which contains polylactide and a biodegradable polyester that is blended therewith to improve the adhesion between the layer and the fibre substrate, and an outer coating layer (3) that constitutes the outer surface of the material and contains polylactide and a biodegradable polyester that is blended therewith to improve the heat sealing ability of the layer, the portion of polylactide in the inner layer (2) being higher than that in the outer layer (3). The inner and/or outer coating layers (2, 3) can further have blended therewith a small amount of acrylic copolymer that improves the adhesion and/or heat sealing ability. The coating layers can be introduced onto the fibre substrate by extrusion or coextrusion.

According to the invention, the coating on the board (1) contains an oxygen barrier layer (7) of polyamide (PA) and a surface layer (8) of polyethylene terephlatae (PET) adhered to it without a binding agent layer between them. The polymer layers (7, 8) have been produced by co-extrusion so that the polyamide layer (7) adheres directly to the board in extrusion. In a closed package according to the invention, the superimposed polyamide and PET layers (7, 8) are located inside the board layer, and on the outer surface of the package there may be a PET layer (9). The package is sealed by heat sealing the PET layers. Polyamide has been selected so that it withstands heat sealing and the heating of the package in an oven.

The invention relates to a polymer-coated heat-sealable packaging material, to a heat-sterilised package formed from this and to the use of the packaging material. The material comprises a fibre base ( 4), which is e.g. a packaging board made of bleached pulp, and polymer heat-seal layers (1, 9) located on both sides of this. In accordance with the invention, the package comprises, outside the fibre base, a polymer coating layer (2), which contains white pigment for covering the fibre base from sight, and a second coating layer (8), which contains light-absorbing pigment. A coating layer pigmented grey inside the fibre base, for instance, provides a light shield for the packaged product. The absorbent black pigment may also be located outside the fibre base underneath a white layer in order to stabilise the brightness of the material. The package may be e.g. a food package heat-sterilised in an autoclave, in which yellowing of the fibre-based material has been avoided by means of a white pigment.
