    Abstract: Disclosed herein is a rotary cutter for cutting gears and the like. The rotary cutter has an axis of rotation (20) and comprises a disc-shaped cutter head (10) having a circumferential edge surface (12). The cutter head (10) further includes an inner wall surface (28) located radially inwardly with respect to the edge surface (12) and being concentric about and extending parallel to the axis of rotation (20). The rotary cutter further includes a cutter ring (40) located on the cutter head (10). The cutter ring (40) has at least one stock removing surface (42) located on a base portion (44) with the base portion (44) having an inside ring surface (50), an outside ring surface (48), and a base surface (46) with the outside ring surface (48) being perpendicular to the base surface (46). The cutter ring (40) is in a radially expanded condition whereby the outside ring surface (48) is seated against the inner wall surface (28) of the cutter head (10) and the base surface (46) is seated against the first surface (14) of the cutter head (10). The cutter ring (40) is expanded by an expanding means (60) located within the cutter ring (40) and contacting the inside ring surface (50). The expanding means (60) effects and maintains the cutter ring (40) in a radially expanded position whereby the cutter ring (40) is centered on the cutter head (10) concentrically about the axis of rotation (20).

    Abstract: A multi-purpose probe module (82), comprising both a touch-trigger type contact probe (84) and a non-contact type probe (86), is used in method and apparatus for monitoring and adjusting the accuracy of a computer-controlled machine for manufacturing precision bevel and hypoid gears. The probe module (82) is mounted on the machine's tool support (12) and is used in conjunction with locating points positioned on the machine's work support (14) to monitor and recalibrate the relative positions of the tool and work supports. The probe module (82) is also used to monitor the flanks of the gear-shaped workpieces (a) for initial stock division, (b)for pre-machining accuracy, (c) for first-piece testing, (d) for in-process accuracy, and (e) for post-machining accuracy. The same probe module (82) is used in combination with a sacrificial test wafer (120) mounted on the work support (14) for adjusting the position of the machine's cup-shaped grinding wheel (28) following each dressing of the latter's working surfaces.
