Abstract: The invention includes compositions comprising, and methods of using, 1,2-indanedione derivatives for detecting an amine compound suc has an amino acid. Methods of detecting and recording the pattern of a fingerprint on a surface are also included, as is a kit for detecting an amine compound such as a constituent of a fingerprint. The invention further includes a device for developing a fingerprint and a method of making 1,2-indanedione derivatives.
