Abstract: A procedure is provided for evaluating the score, snap and edge appearance of wallboard panels, and includes scoring a wallboard panel with a knife at a constant and known force using a benchtop board scoring device; snapping the scored panel in a Universal Board Testing Machine to measure the breaking force, forming a snapped panel edge; measuring a cleanliness of the snapped panel edge by placing a straight edge against the snapped panel edge and measuring gaps between the snapped panel edge and the straight edge in a plurality of locations on a face of the panel, and a plurality of locations on a back of the panel; and averaging all of the measured gaps to create an Index Score.

Abstract: Gypsum boards formed from synthetic gypsum and other gypsum sources having high chloride salt concentrations. Gypsum boards may include a board core including set gypsum. A total concentration of the chloride anion in the board core ranges from about 500 ppm to about 3000 ppm, typically about 1000 ppm to about 3000 ppm, based on weight of the calcium sulfate hemihydrate. An inner surface of a front paper cover sheet contacts a first face of the board core. An inner surface of a back paper cover sheet contacts a second face of the board core. A starch layer coats the inner surface of at least one of the front and back cover sheet. Methods of making the gypsum board, and a wall system for employing the gypsum boards, are also provided.

Abstract: A bench top board scoring device (10) is provided, including a frame (14) having a first end (16) and an opposite second end (18), a work area (20) defined between the first and second ends (16, 18), each end (16, 18) having at least one leg (22) configured for contacting a substrate (12). A track (36) is connected to the frame (14) and extends between the first end (16, 18, 38) and the second end (16, 18, 38), a carriage (42) is slidably mounted to the track (36) for travel between the first end (16) and the second end (18), and an arm (50) has an upper surface (52), a pivot end (54) pivotally connected to the carriage (42), and an opposite knife mount end (56). A knife blade (78) is mounted to the knife mount end (56). Wherein the present device (10) is constructed and arranged so that as the carriage (42) is moved from the first end (16) to the second end (18), wallboard samples placed in the work area (20) and contacted by the knife blade (78) receive a constant scoring force.
