Embodiments herein relate to a method and apparatus for removing contaminants from agricultural products. The apparatus comprises a cleaning chamber, one or more transducers, heaters and container. The contaminated agricultural products are placed in a container and immersed in the aqueous solution inside the cleaning chamber. The transducers generate ultrasonic waves which cause formation of plurality of bubbles of the aqueous solution for 10 bombarding with the agricultural products resulting in the separation of the contaminants. The cleaned agricultural products are rinsed in a rinsing container with the hot water and then dried by passing hot air to remove surface water.

The instant invention discloses a coffee washing machine wherein the coffee mucilage has previously been degraded by means of natural fermentation or by the addition of pectinolytic enzymes, wherein the degradation process minimizes the coffee's environmental impact together with the washing process. The method disclosed in the instant invention comprises: i) depulping coffee berries; ii) conveying coffee to a screening system in order to remove berries not depulped and the vast majority of the pulp; iii) conveying depulped berries to a tank, iv) storing the depulped berries in tanks allowing for mucilage degradation either through natural fermentation or by use of pectinolytic enzymes; v) conveying coffee from the fermentation tank towards the mechanical washer; vi) removing the degraded mucilage, allowing for washed coffee ready to initiate the drying phase.

A treatment plant can be equipped with a variable number of MWUs, with additional remote MWUs to meet the desired production capacity. Each MWU consists of a vertical watertight cylinder containing a concetric basket; on the top it is connected to the main product manifold and to the vacuum collector, and at the bottom it is connected to the product drain collector, to the load/unload manifold and to the fluids recycling manifolds. Each MWU is connected to the other MWU of the plant, and to the external tank, through independent manifolds, by appropriate valves, to prevent the mixing of fluids and the cross-contamination.
