In other embodiments of the invention, a water vapor recycle system may be employed to recycle water vapor throughout a portion of the toaster portion of the apparatus housing. The solvent vapor recycle system may comprise an appropriate meal dust separator, blower and superheater. The water vapor recycle system may comprise an appropriate ejector or blower and superheater. Water vapor recovered in the solvent extraction process may be used as a water vapor feed to the heated water vapor recycling system.

A method and an apparatus for washing and disinfecting root crop. According to the method, the root crop is washed with an aqueous washing liquid, which, according to the present invention, is prepared by electrolysis of chloride salt to produce hypochlorite and possibly chlorates, immediately before the washing liquid is used. Solid impurities are separated from the used washing liquid and the purified washing liquid is recovered and recirculated to produce hypochlorite and chlorate. With the help of the present invention, the creation of environment-loading waste can be avoided. The soil can be recovered and, after washing, used for growing potatoes, and the salt solution is returned to the closed washing system and continuously recirculated in the system.

The invention provides a device and a method for cleaning food. The device according to one embodiment of the invention comprises a providing unit (12), for providing alkaline water; and a humidifying unit (14), connected with said providing unit, for humidifying said alkaline water so as to generate alkaline mist and applying said alkaline mist to the surface of said food, whereby the residue on the surface of said food is hydrolyzed by said alkaline mist. The procedure of cleaning is safe and nontoxic for human beings; it saves water and does not destroy the nutrition, the appearance and the taste of the food. The device according to a preferable embodiment of the invention further comprises a heater (16), for heating the alkaline water to a predefined temperature, and the device uses heated alkaline mist to remove the residue, thus the hydrolyzation of the residue is accelerated.

The technology of washing and treatment MWU (modular washing unit) is conceived to allow the transport and the treatment of the product in confined environment, with clean water (counter- current) In the MWU the product is submitted to sequence of filling and emptying with appropriated solutions, progressively cleaner, prior to subsequent discretionary treatments. A treatment plant can be equipped with a variable number of MWUs, with additional remote MWUs to meet the desired production capacity. Each MWU consists of a vertical watertight cylinder containing a concetric basket; on the top it is connected to the main product manifold and to the vacuum collector, and at the bottom it is connected to the product drain collector, to the load/unload manifold and to the fluids recycling manifolds. Each MWU is connected to the other MWU of the plant, and to the external tank, through independent manifolds, by appropriate valves, to prevent the mixing of fluids and the cross-contamination.
