Abstract:
A patient transportation device (10) includes a backboard (12) formed of or including structural foam with a solid skin exterior (14) and a foamed core (18). A plurality of handles (52) is removably coupled to the backboard. A plurality of straps (92) is each coupled between plurality of handles and the backboard. Cartridges (64) with retraction mechanisms can be received in channels (60) in the backboard.
Abstract:
The invention is directed to a patient transfer system with associated patient support frames, lift carts, lifts, carts, and other accessories for use therewith. The support frames of the present invention as depicted in the exemplary embodiments are designed to: (a) provide rigidity (exoskeleton) to the human body for positioning to provide stability for purposes of transferring, lifting and/or transporting the subject via a mobile device, such as a powered lift device; (b) a male/female coupling for coupling to a tine or other carriage mechanism of a lifting device thereto for the purpose of moving or lifting the subject; and/or (c) be used as a support or frame that will interact with the body as an exoskeleton to aid with the activities of daily living.

Abstract:
A patient transfer system (1300) is provided which enables a single operator to transfer a patient from a first horizontal surface (2304) to a second horizontal surface (2308). The transfer is accomplished with minimal risk of injury to the operator and patient. The patient transfer system includes a transfer caddy (1302), transfer bridge (1304) and transfer rod (1306). The transfer caddy (1302) is mobile and contains means (1608, 1738) for storing the transfer bridge (1304) and transfer rod (1306). The transfer bridge (1304) and transfer rod (1306) are foldable for storage and transport.
Abstract:
The invention includes several devices (100, 250, 300, 400, 500, 602, 800, 900, 940, 1000, 1040, 1110, 1120) for readily transferring patients from one platform to another by one attendant. A first system (100) of horizontal transfer of patients (126) is adapted to use existing transfer sheets (190) and cart (102) appropriately modified. A transfer sheet (190) is attached to a clamping device (194) that has a releasable catch (200) that holds the sheet (190) in a cavity (198). A plurality of straps (172) are attached to the clamping device (194). The other ends of the straps (172) are attached to reels (175) that are part of a winch (138). Activation of the winch (138) winds the straps (172) onto the reels (175). The invention also includes improved bed jackets (702) that can be attached to a winch (712, 726) for lifting a patient either to re-position them on a surface or to transport them. The invention also includes devices (574, 1200, 1200') with very low friction surfaces to assist with the transfer process.
Abstract:
A preferred embodiment of the present invention comprises a mobile cantilever transfer device for transferring mobility-impaired patients. In one embodiment, the mobile cantilever transfer device includes a support surface that is cantilevered from a lift cart so that the support surface may be positioned over the origination or destination location for a transfer, such as a patient's bed. In yet another embodiment, the cantilevered support surface may be laterally extended from the lift cart in order to allow the support surface to be positioned at different points over a transfer location without moving the lift cart. In yet another embodiment, multiple sides of the support surface may be connected to the lift cart so that a transfer can be accomplished from multiple directions, such as on either side of a patient's bed.
Abstract:
Apparatus including a substantially pliable underlayment (2450, 2500, 2520, 2540, 2560, 2600, 2630, 2640), connecting member (1552, 2480), and means to exert a force to transfer or reposition a patient is provided. The substantially pliable underlayment includes a substantially smooth mantle (2452, 2502, 2522, 2562, 2602, 2642), an attaching structure (2456, 2506, 2526, 2546, 2566, 2604) operably adjacent the mantle, and a reinforcing structure (2454, 2504, 2524, 2544, 2564) for imparting resistance to mantle distortion during transfer or repositioning. The attaching structure includes a reinforced beaded edge (2604, 2644) and an attaching structure (2648) cooperating with the mantle to form a pocket (2459) accommodating a transfer bar (2470). The reinforcing structure includes stitching (2508, 2510) disposed generally diagonally in the mantle and reinforcing fibers present in the material of the mantle. A method of using the pliable underlayment to transfer or reposition a patient is also provided.
Abstract:
Patient support apparatus comprising: a patient support assembly; a winch for vertically displacing the patient support assembly; yieldable force application apparatus operative to apply a restraining force to the patient support assembly; and a displacement limiter operative to limit the vertical displacement of the patient support assembly in at least one direction.
Abstract:
A mechanical aid (10) for lifting handicapped persons, bedridden patients and other individuals of like disposition. The present invention is directed to a lifting device for raising physically incapacitated persons which is operable by a single attendant. To this end, a simple, light weight frame (5) is provided with a slidable, hinged seat (15) which is designed to raise or lower a patient alternately from lower to higher elevations.
Abstract:
A spine board (100) includes a main body (101) having a top surface (102) and an opposing bottom surface (104) that define a thickness (127) of the main body (101), a first end (106) and an opposing second end (108) that define a length (123) of the main body (101) and a first longitudinal side (110) and a second longitudinal side (112) that define a width (125) of the main body (101). Longitudinal and lateral channels (122a-c, 124a-d) and are located between the top and bottom surfaces (102, 104) in the main body (101) and contain either cartridges (129a-b, 134a-d) that house straps (130, 132) for securing the patient to the board (100) or a key (136) to affix a cervical collar (114) to the main body (101).
