This invention comprises devices, compositions and methods for quantitative detecting analytes in complex solutions by Raman spectroscopy. Passivating agents associated with enhancing surfaces can decrease direct, non-specific interaction between analytes and the enhancing surface. By decreasing direct interaction between analytes and enhancing surfaces, relatively more selective detection of the analyte can be performed. Analyte receptors can be either highly selective or have lesser selectivity. Reproducible, concentration-dependent Raman spectroscopic analyses can be performed using flow-through cells incorporating passivated substrates. By using receptors having low selectivity, different analytes can be detected simultaneously. Flow cells are provided that permit rapid, and/or continuous monitoring of samples, thereby permitting automated sample analysis.

The invention concerns a method for preparing mineral colloidal particles in aqueous dispersion with controlled size from a precursor, comprising a) aqueous solution heat treatment of said precursor which is a metal cation mineral salt; b) complexing of the product resulting from a) with at least a water soluble block copolymer comprising a complexing anionic hydrophilic block and at least a stabilising non-ionic hydrophilic block; and c) partial or total hydrolysis of said precursor to obtain a controlled growth of mineral particles in the form of an aqueous dispersion. The invention also concerns the use of said particles as reinforcing fillers for polymers.

A zirconia sol comprising an aqueous phase having dispersed therein a plurality of single crystal zirconia particles having an average primary particle size less than about 20 nm. The zirconia sols are substantially non associated having a dispersion index ranging from about 1-3 and are highly crystalline exhibiting a crystallinity index of about 0.65 or greater. Of the crystalline phase, about 70% or greater exists in combined cubic and tetragonal crystal lattice structures without a crystal phase stabilizer. Also described is a hydrothermal method of making zirconia sols having substantially non-associated zirconia particles and composite materials made from the zirconia sols.

A method is described for the preparation of uniform colloidal particles of ferrites, containing manganese (II), for example MnFe2O4, at a relatively low temperature in the presence of an aminodextran solution which acts as a support vehicle for the nucleation and growth of colloidal particles of metal oxide and for dispersion as separate single particles. Monodispersed metal ferrite particles have magnetic properties that are useful for manufacturing transformers, inductors, and audio and video recording heads. The ferrite particles may also be used as specific cell surface markers.
