Abstract:
A cutter build and truing machine (22) comprising a mechanism (52, 54) to position cutting blades (98) by moving the blades in either direction in a mounting slot (96) of a cutter head (94). The machine further includes a torque spindle (62) and driver (66) to automatically tighten or loosen clamp bolts (102).
Abstract:
Abstract:
A method of truing cutting tools of the type comprising a plurality of stick-type cutting blades (3) releasably secured in a cutter head (2), the cutting blades having a cutting edge (12) and a cutting side relief surface (8) oriented at a predetermined relief angle ( gamma ). The method comprises mounting a cutting tool to the spindle (46) of a truing apparatus (40) having a cutting tool spindle and a measuring probe (20) with the probe capable of being moved along a first direction (Y-axis) defining probe offset travel and along a second direction (26) defining in/out feed motion of the probe (20). The cutting side relief surface (8) of the cutting blade is positioned with respect to the probe (20) whereby the cutting side relief surface (8) is substantially parallel to the direction of probe offset travel. The cutting side surface (8) of the cutting blade is probed and the position reading is recorded. The recorded position is compared with a predetermined position, and (a) if the recorded position is within a pre-set tolerance range of the predetermined position, the cutting tool is indexed to another cutting blade, or, (b) if the recorded position is outside of a pre-set tolerance range of the predetermined position, the position of the cutting blade in said cutter head is axially adjusted by an amount to reposition the cutting side within the pre-set tolerance range.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein is a method of truing and angling the blades of a form-relieved face mill cutter during the blade sharpening process thus eliminating a separate time-consuming procedure for truing and angling. The position of the cutting edge of each blade is determined and a reference blade is selected. The sharpening plane of each remaining cutting blade is repositioned, if needed, such that after removing stock material from the blades in accordance with the newly repositioned sharpening plane, the cutting edge of each blade will follow essentially the same path when the cutter is rotated about its axis.
Abstract:
A method of grinding 3-face ground cutting blades for producing gears by a face hobbing cutting process wherein the correct initial blade spacing angle φ is achieved while providing the desired values for the effective cutting edge hook angle and the effective side rake angle as well as providing a complete cutting blade front face clean- up.
