Abstract:
A fastener driving tool for driving fasteners toward a work surface comprises a body having a forward end, a rear end, and a cylinder with an axis, a piston mounted within the cylinder, a power source for driving the piston axially forwardly, a driver blade extending axially forwardly from the piston, a nosepiece extending axially forwardly from the front end of the tool body, wherein the nosepiece encloses a drive bore for guiding the fasteners and the driver blade toward the work surface, there being an opening into the drive bore for the fasteners, a magazine for guiding the fasteners to the opening. In one aspect, the magazine and the nosepiece are fixed with respect to each other, and the tool includes a fastener guide that extends axially forwardly from the nosepiece and moves with respect to the nosepiece between an extended position and a retracted position. In another aspect, the opening into the drive bore provides a small clearance through which the tips can pass, wherein the opening is long enough to accommodate fasteners of at least two different lengths.

The indirect fire device for fixing fasteners (13) in a substrate material of the invention comprises a piston for driving a fastener (13) movably mounted in a barrel and a plug guide (11) for guiding a fastener (13) towards the substrate material. The device is adapted to receive a magazine (19) for receiving a strip (14) of fasteners (13) in order to introduce the fasteners (13) one by one into the plug guide (11). Each fastener (1.3) is held in a sleeve comprising bridges (16) for connection to another sleeve (15). The plug guide (11) of the device includes a zone having an enlarged circular section (21) at the opening of the magazine (19) leading into the plug guide (11), extending axially over the length (h) of a sleeve (15) increased by the stroke of the plug guide (11) for loading the device (L - L').

The invention is directed to a nail driving device, comprising a driving ram having a drive unit and a feed mechanism for a nail strip that is transportable in a transporting direction, wherein a guide member (8) and/or a transporting member (10) of the feed mechanism acts in operation on the receiving ribbon (5). It is proposed that the guide member and/or transporting member is formed to operate on receiving ribbons of different widths.

The device is intended to propel a fastening element (1) under the action of combustion gas from an explosive charge contained in a cartridge (10) mounted on a cartridge holder (13) received in a gun holder (3) and intended to be entered into a combustion chamber (11) situated at the rear of the cannon (4) slidably fitted in the gun holder (3). Also foreseen is an opening lever (19-25) designed to, after firing, draw the cannon (4) forward in the gun holder (3), bring it away from the cartridge holder (13) and thus open the device .

A powder-actuated fastener-driving tool of the type disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 4,655,380, modified to include a safety system for preventing accidental discharge of the tool, a fastener storage and feed assembly, and a simpler firing pin assembly. The safety system prevents discharge of a fastener from the tool except when the front of the tool is engaged with a workpiece and the cylinder assembly is urged rearwardly a selected distance into the housing of the tool. The fastener storage and feed assembly is adapted to store a strip of fasteners and to index the strip so as to position the leading fastener in the strip in position to be discharged from the tool. In the present invention, a unitized firing pin is provided for firing the cartridges used in the tool, instead of the plural-element firing actuator and pin assembly of the '380 tool.

A fastener feeding mechanism for a power actuated gun (10, 310, 410, 510) having a track (16, 316, 416, 516) for holding a plurality of fasteners (18, 318, 636). Fasteners are biased by a spring (32, 372, 672) down the track towards a holding or latch mechanism (22, 322, 422, 522). The holding or latch mechanism has a retractable latch. The holding or latch mechanism holds a fastener in a predetermined position to be driven into a substrate. A guide (14, 314, 414, 514) attached to a barrel (12, 312, 412, 512) of a power actuated gun guides the barrel permitting the barrel to be advanced for firing and driving the fastener. After firing a bias on the guide causes the barrel to be retracted for the positioning of another fastener to be driven. The present invention greatly facilitates the driving of fasteners having a plate, and permits the driving of fasteners quickly resulting in more efficient and therefore less costly construction.
