An improved substrate and stamper holder and method of forming substrates are disclosed. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, a substrate for a DVD has a moat (304) with a capillary barrier shape. Under one embodiment, the moat has a region (306) with an abrupt outer diameter transition. One embodiment has the outer diameter transition at approximately at a right angle relative to a registering surface of the substrate. Another embodiment of the invention provides a wider moat. The improvements reduce the likelihood of resin wicking past the moats.

In a method for making a substrate for a digital versatile disc, a stamper (100) having a front side with a pitted surface, a back side, and a central opening is first provided. The central opening is defined by a surface having an edge on the front side and an edge on the back side. A burr (102) is formed on the edge of the surface on the front side of the stamper, e.g., by punching the central hole from the back side of the stamper. The stamper (100) is then disposed within a mold (106) such that the front side faces the mold cavity (104). Thereafter, the substrate (112) is molded in the mold. In the molding process, the burr (102) on the front side of the stamper (100) forms a rounded edge (112a) in one of the walls defining an annular groove in the substrate. This rounded edge (112a) enables substrates to be bonded together with an extremely thin layer of adhesive material without the centering and alignment problems caused by burrs. A digital versatile disc including a substrate formed by this method and a method for forming a stamper for use in the manufacture of a substrate for a digital versatile disc also are described.

The disc will has a flat data storage section of its substrate that is less than 0.7 millimeters thick, while the central region of the disc is defined by a dome structure adjacent to the spindle aperture that is of standard digital disc thickness. The disc is thin enough such that its substrate is flexible. The dome structure is shaped to provide the widest compatibility with player/recorders, as well as with disc printing systems. Disc versions are available that provide conical dome structures, as well as slivered dome structures of both conical and rectangular cross-section, and a combined design having a plurality of raised protrusions on the top surface of the disc, and a flat central ring protruding from the bottom surface of the disc. The method for manufacturing the discs simply requires the replacement of the conventional stamper holder with a stamper holding having a non-flat face.
