An optical disk exhibiting no detrimental thickness increase (edge wedge effect) that arises at the outer diameter of an optical disk substrate during an injection molding manufacturing process, and an apparatus and method for making such a disk. The optical disk of the present invention is designed for use with an optical disk player, especially where the data on the optical disk is stored air incident. This optical disk includes a disk substrate made from a molded polymeric material. The disk substrate has a first major surface, a second major surface, and an outer edge. The first major surface of the optical disk includes a data region having an intermediate portion and an outer portion. The outer portion extends to the outer edge of the optical disk. The disk substrate has a thickness defined by the distance between the first major surface and the second major surface. The optical disk also includes an information layer covering the data region. In the present invention, the thickness of the intermediate portion of the data region is substantially equal to the thickness of the outer portion of the data region such that the outer portion of the data region is capable of being used by the optical disk player.

A substrate (3) coated with photoresist (2) is exposed to light lineally through a lens (1). The portion to be exposed is shifted from the first exposure position (O1) to a position (O2) spaced from the first exposure position (O1) by a distance equal to the sum of the groove width (Gw) and the land width (Lw) and exposed parallel to the exposure line of the first exposure. This procedure is repeated to form exposed regions (2e) having a width (Lw) at intervals (Gw) on the resist (2). The resist is developed, the exposed regions (2e) are removed, and resin is pressed against the substrate, thus forming a replica. A stamper is produced from the replica by electroforming. With this stamper, a formed substrate with a groove is made of glass or resin. The land width (Lw) is determined by the effective spot diameter phi of the optical system, and the groove width (Gw) can be smaller than this.

A process for manufacturing an optical data storage disk stamper includes the steps of providing a chemically vapor-deposited, silicon carbide substrate having a toughness of about 4.5 MPa 2ROOT m, a roughness of about 1 nm, and a flatness of about 6 mu m and depositing a negative photoresist on a surface of the substrate. The substrate has a diameter greater than about 120 mm and a thickness greater than about one mm. The negative photoresist then is exposed with a laser to form a negative, data pattern in the photoresist. The photoresist is developed, and the ceramic substrate is ion machined to form the data pattern, in the substrate, such that a spiral track of ridges and lands is formed wherein each ridge has a height of about in a range of 20 to 200 nm. After the data pattern has been ion machined into the substrate, the developed photoresist is stripped from the substrate.

The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a stamper for injection molding, and more particularly, to a method for manufacturing a stamper for injection molding which can prevent a scratch from forming thereon and has an excellent durability owing to high hardness even after manufacturing of the metal stamper with micro patterns formed thereon is finished. The method for manufacturing a stamper for injection molding includes a pattern forming step for forming a predetermined micro pattern on a substrate, a metal plating step for making metal plating on the substrate to form a stamper having the micro pattern transcribed thereto, a stamper separating step for separating the stamper of the metal plating from the substrate, and a protective layer coating step for coating a protective layer on the stamper for maintaining a mirror surface.

Disclosed are injection moldings, an injection-molding apparatus and a method thereof. The injection-molding apparatus comprises: a cavity mold having a cavity; a core mold having a core surface to form a molding space for injection moldings when being joined to the cavity mold; a heating unit for heating the cavity mold or the core mold; a cooling unit for cooling the cavity mold or the core mold; and a patterning stamp having a micrometer or nanometer sized pattern and provided on an inner surface of the molding space. According to the injection-molding apparatus, a micrometer or nanometer sized pattern is formed on a surface of injection moldings so as to have a super-hydrophobic characteristic and an optical characteristic, and a micrometer or nanometer sized pattern of a complex structure can be implemented.
