Disclosed is a process for the preparation of multilayered, shaped articles having high transparency and low haze and comprising one or more thermoplastic polymers selected from polyesters, polycarbonates, and polyarylates, and a copolyamide or a transamidized, homogeneous blend of a least two polyamides. The thermoplastic polymer components and the polyamide components have refractive indices which differ by about 0.006 to about -0.0006. The small difference in the refractive indices enable the incorporation of regrind into one or more of the layers of the article while maintaining high clarity. These articles can exhibit improved excellent barrier properties and good melt processability while retaining excellent mechanical properties. Metal catalysts can be incorporated into one or more layers to impart oxygen-scavenging properties.

High gas barrier, delamination-resistant polyamide compositions suitable for extended shelf-life packaging applications are provided. Also provided are polyamide compositions exhibiting high oxygen scavenging capability. The polyamide compositions comprise mXD A-IPA containing copolymers which provide excellent properties to the complete polyamide compositions. Also provided are direct blends of the polyamide compositions with other polymers. The polyamide products are particularly suited for producing barrier packaging articles such as monolayer or multi-layer films, sheets, thermoformed containers and molded bottles. Such articles are useful in a variety of oxygen-sensitive food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and health care product packaging applications.

We disclose a packaging article (100), defining a package interior (121) and a package exterior (140), and comprising (i) a first layer (106), containing an oxygen scavenging polymer the oxygen scavenging polymer comprises (a) an ethylenic backbone or a polyester backbone and (b) at least one cyclic olefinic group; (ii) a second layer (104), containing a functional barrier polymer; and (iii) a transition metal organic salt in at least one of the first layer or a layer adjacent to the first layer; wherein the second layer is located between the first layer and the package interior. The packaging article can further comprise a functional absorber. Such a packaging article is capable of both scavenging oxygen present in the package interior and inhibiting the migration of off-taste- or off-odor-imparting scavenging byproducts from the first layer to the package interior.

A flexible laminate of films of thermoplastic polymer material comprises fluted ply A and substantially flat ply B, adhered to one another at the crests of A in contact with B. The wavelength of the flutes is preferably no more than 3mm. The thickness of A is generally the same within the non-bonded zones as it is within the bonded zones or A has attenuated zones extending parallel to the flute direction, each bonding zone being mainly located within a first attenuated zone. Apparatus for forming the laminate comprises aligned grooved fluting rollers and grooved laminating roller. The laminate has useful mechanical characteristics, as a flexible material, e.g. when formed into bags which may be self-supporting. Filler material may be filled into the flutes and/or perforations may be provided in one or both plies after lamination.
