Abstract: A method for expelling air out of mailpieces includes the steps of creating a stack of the mailpieces (601), cutting an opening in at least some of the mailpieces (603), jogging the stack of mailpieces (605), and subjecting the stack of mailpieces to a compression cycle (607) and a decompression cycle (609) during the jogging step (611) for expelling air out of the some of the mailpieces through their corresponding openings.

Abstract: An apparatus (10) is provided for processing mail by severing an edge of each envelope (6) in a stack of mail. The apparatus includes an input bin (20) for receiving a stack of mail. A feeder (30) feeds the bottom envelope from the input bin (20) to a transport (60) that conveys the envelope along an envelope path. A cutter (70) positioned along the envelope path severs one edge of the envelopes. A detector (40, 50) detects a characteristic of the envelope and a sorter (80) sorts the envelope in response to the detected characteristic.

Abstract: Device for opening mail envelopes (13), in which a movable blade (10) is mounted on a support (3) and moves against a fixed edge which can be a blade (25). The movable blade extends diagonally in a longitudinal direction. The cutting is carried out in the place where the blades (10, 25) are engaged, by means of a progressive displacement of the movable blade along the edge of the envelope. The blades (10, 25) are mounted on a frame (1). A waste container (32), rearwardly removable, can be placed under the blades.
