A metal closure having multiple thread engaging lugs configured to decrease the pressure exerted by the closure lugs on the neck of a container is provided. In various embodiments, the metal closure comprises a top wall, a skirt extending downward from a peripheral edge of the top wall, a lower edge included on the skirt, and a plurality of lugs formed at the lower edge of the skirt. Pressure may be decreased by the closure having more lugs and/or larger lugs than other metal closures. The closure is provided with a gasket configured to provide enhanced sealing properties when the closure is secured to a container.

A can comprises a can body (10) and a lid (4). The can body is manufactured using only a single homogeneous piece of material and has an edge that defines a top opening into the can. The can body also has an inwardly directed bead (23), which extends around the body, is adjacent to the can body edge, and defines an inwardly facing sealing surface (24) of substantially constant transverse cross-sectional dimension along an axial extent. The lid defines an outwardly directed sealing surface which abuts the inwardly facing sealing surface presented by the inwardly directed bead in order to seal the lid to the can body. An alternative can body has an inwardly directed pinched or collapsed bead which defines an upwardly facing sealing surface (34) for engagement with a downwardly facing sealing surface of a can lid. The alternative can body additionally has an inwardly directed bead (35) between the can body edge and the pinched or collapsed bead. An outer brim (42) of the lid is configured to be retained between the two beads of the alternative can body.

A lug closure (10) includes a central top panel (20), an annular channel (30) outboard of the top panel, a downwardly extending skirt (50) outboard of the channel, the skirt terminating at an inward curl (54) that defines a curl height, and lugs (60) formed in the curl. Each one of the lugs includes a body that extends radially inwardly from the skirt. The body includes a leading edge (70a) that merges into a leading portion (80a) of the curl. The leading edge tapers in thickness from the curl height to a minimum lug thickness and forms a leading edge vertical taper angle from horizontal between 6 and 15 degrees. A trailing edge (70b) merges into a trailing portion (80b) of the curl and the trailing edge (70b) tapers in thickness from the curl height to the minimum lug thickness.
Abstract:
An environmentally friendly product packaging assembly having a secondary use after a product has been removed therefrom. The packaging assembly comprises a candle having a wall made of a vaporizable material and defining a cavity therein for retaining the product. The candle includes a wick embedded in the wall in a spiral, coiled or helical fashion and positioned to substantially encircle the cavity. The assembly may include a containment mechanism that at least partially restricts access to the cavity and thereby aids in retaining the product therein. The assembly may further include a base positioned under a bottom end of the candle. The containment mechanism and base may themselves be made out of recyclable or combustible materials. Once the product has been removed from the cavity, the assembly may be used as a conventional candle. The candle wall is vaporized leaving little to no waste for disposal.

The cover includes a top wall (42) and a peripheral flange (44) having an inner surface. The inner surface is substantially smooth and is configured to interact with the rib structure when the cover is received over the outer peripheral surface of the side wall so as to form an interference fit.

The device may further comprise a suspension handle (70) coupled to the retention ring (40), and a seal means (60) cooperating with both the retention ring (40) and the locking ring (50) to make evident a first opening of the container.

A container in the form of a sheet-metal can with removable sheet-metal lid for the closure and exposure of a storage space for a goods item. The lid is secured against accidental opening by means of an elastic plastics locking ring (24), which is constructed as an annularly closed profile having a substantially U-shaped portion forming a downwardly open annular channel that encloses the circumferential edge portion of the lid and the opening edge portion of the can and secures the lid and with an annular bead (29) engages below a radially projecting portion (12) of the opening edge portion (6) of the can. The locking ring (24) has a weakening point (34), which can be broken open for opening of the container when the weakening point (34) is exposed to breaking forces exceeding a fixed maximum load in the handling of the container, and the locking ring has a point of engagement (37), situated in the proximity of the weakening point, for a breaking tool (38) so as to be able with a rocking motion to break open the locking ring at the weakening point, which normally is not visible to the eye. The point of engagement (37) for a breaking tool (38) is constituted by a protrusion of the locking ring (24), situated on the outer side of the ring below the engagement bead of the ring. The protrusion extends close to the lower edge of the skirt and has an opening which is open at least in the downward direction.
