The invention relates to a coated catalyst comprising a catalyst support that contains ZrO2 and has a coating containing Pd and Au. The ratio between Au and Pd atoms in the coated catalyst ranges from 0.2 to 1.2. In order to provide a coated catalyst that has a relatively high alkenyl acetate activity, the maximum Pd concentration in the coated catalyst is 0.75 percent by weight.

This invention provides an integrated two stage economical process for the production of vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) from acetic acid in the vapor phase. First, acetic acid is selectively hydrogenated over a hydrogenating catalyst composition to form ethylene either in a single reactor zone or in a dual reactor zone wherein the intermediate hydrogenated products are either dehydrated and/or cracked to form ethylene. In a subsequent second stage so formed ethylene is reacted with molecular oxygen and acetic acid over a suitable catalyst to form VAM. In an embodiment of this invention reaction of acetic acid and hydrogen over a hydrogenation catalyst and subsequent reaction over a dehydration catalyst selectively produces ethylene, which is further mixed with acetic acid and molecular oxygen and reacted over a supported palladium/gold/potassium catalyst.

A new method for preparing supported palladium-gold catalysts is disclosed. The method comprises sulfating a titanium dioxide support, calcining the sulfated support, impregnating the calcined support with a palladium salt, a gold salt, and an alkali metal or ammonium compound, calcining the impregnated support, and reducing the calcined support. The resultant supported palladium-gold catalysts have increased activity and stability in the acetoxylation.

An integrated process for making methanol, acetic acid, and a product from an associated process is disclosed. Syngas (120) is produced by combined steam reforming (109) and autothermal reforming (118) of natural gas (102) where a portion (112) of the natural gas bypasses the steam reformer (109) and is blended with the steam reformer effluent for supply to the autothermal reformer (ATR) (118) with C02 recycle (110). A portion of the syngas is fed to C02 removal (122) to obtain the recycle C02 and cold box (130) to obtain a hydrogen stream (131) and a CO stream (135). The remaining syngas, hydrogen stream (131) and C02 from an associated process are fed to methanol synthesis (140), which produces methanol and a purge stream (124) supplied to the C02 removal unit. The methanol is supplied to an acetic acid unit (13)6 with the CO (135) to make acetic acid, which in turn is supplied to a VAM synthesis unit (148). Oxygen for both the ATR and VAM synthesis can be supplied by a common air separation unit (116), and utilities such as steam generation can further integrate the process.

A second aspect pertains to a palladium/gold catalyst or precatalyst at is based on a layered support material where one layer of the support materiel is substantially free of catalytic components. A third aspect pertains to a palladium/gold catalyst or precatalysts on a zirconia containing support material. A fourth aspect pertains to a palladium gold catalyst or pre-catalyst that is produced from substantially chloride free catalytic components.

Abstract: The invention relates to the reproduction of the industrial waste and it is an environmental treatment process for the bottom residue of vinyl acetate. Said process comprises the process of washing and dewatering the bottom residue, can attain the no public nuisance treatment of the industrial residue and can obtain the solid poly(vinyl acetate) at a low cost when recovering the acetate. The poly(vinyl acetate) of the invention can be used for preparing quick-drying oil paint, primer paint, antirust paint, adhesive, printing ink, building material and road material etc. and its production cost is low. The cost of the process equipment of the invention is low and the operation is simple and convenient. The invention has found a new significantly environmental and economic treatment process for the bottom residue discharged from the production process of vinyl acetate.
