Disclosed herein are ethylene-based polymers having a higher molecular weight component and a lower molecular weight component, and characterized by a density greater than 0.945 g/cm3, a melt index less than 1.5 g/10 min, and a ratio of high load melt index to melt index ranging from 40 to 175. These polymers have the processability of chromium-based resins, but with improved stiffness and stress crack resistance, and can be used in blow molding and other end-use applications.

Methods of forming polymer layers on polymer surfaces using surface initiated atom-transfer radical-polymerization (ATRP) are described. The method can include functionalization steps prior to performing surface initiated ATRP, such as hydroxylation steps and/or halogenation steps. The hydroxylation step can be carried out in a solution including potassium persulfate, ammonium persulfate, or lithium hydroxide. The halogenation step can also be carried out in a solution. The methods described herein can be performed on bundles of hollow polymer fibers, including bundles of hollow polymer fibers mounted in a module.

Disclosed are processes for forming an oligomer product by contacting a feedstock olefin containing trisubstituted olefins with a solid acid catalyst. The oligomer product can be formed at an oligomerization temperature in a range from -20 o C to 40 o C. Polyalphaolefins produced from the oligomer product can have reduced viscosities at low temperatures.

The invention relates to a process for forming a polyalphaolefin, the process comprising the step of polymerizing at least one C 8 -C 12 monomer, preferably a decene such as 1-decene, in the presence of an aluminoxane, an activator and a metallocene to form the polyalphaolefin, wherein the molar ratio of the aluminoxane to the metallocene is less than 250:1. The invention also relates to a process for forming a polyalphaolefin having a desired kinematic viscosity from at least one monomer in the presence of an aluminoxane, an organoboron compound and a metallocene. The process comprises the steps of, inter alia, providing a correlation between (i) the molar ratio of the aluminoxane to at least one of the organoboron compound and the metallocene, and (ii) the kinematic viscosity of the polyalphaolefin to form polyalphaolefins having predictable viscosities.

The present invention relates to poly alpha-olefins (PAO 's) which exhibit superior Noack volatility at low pour points. The poly alpha-olefin is prepared from an olefin feed comprised of a blend of octene, decene, and dodecene, the feed comprising at least 10 weight % octene and at least 30 weight% dodecene. The process includes both synthesis and distillation of the olefin and oligomerization olefin. The oligomerized olefin feed yields at least 50% low viscosity PAO having a nominal viscosity at 100° C of about 4 cSt.

The invention is directed to polyalphaolefins (PAOs) and processes for forming PAOs. In one embodiment, the invention is to a process for forming a PAO comprising polymerizing C 8 -C 12 α-olefin monomers in the presence of hydrogen, a C 8 -C 12 saturated hydrocarbon, e.g., a C 8 -C 12 saturated straight-chain hydrocarbon, and a catalyst system in a reaction vessel, wherein the C 8 -C 12 ; saturated straight-chain hydrocarbon has about the same number of carbon atoms as the C 8 C 12 α-olefin monomers. The C 8 -C 12 saturated straight-chain hydrocarbon optionally is derived from a crude PAO product formed by the process of the invention. The invention is also directed to reaction systems for performing the processes of the invention, to processes for controlling PAO viscosity based on residence time, and to the removal of spent catalyst using a solid adsorbent particles.
