Polymeric sorbents for carbon dioxide are provided. More particularly, the polymeric sorbents are a reaction product of a divinylbenzene/maleic anhydride precursor polymeric material with a nitrogen-containing compound. The nitrogen-containing compound is covalently attached to the polymeric sorbents. Additionally, methods of sorbing carbon dioxide on the polymeric sorbents and compositions resulting from sorbing carbon dioxide on the polymeric sorbents are provided. The polymeric sorbents typically are porous and can selectively remove carbon dioxide from other gases such as methane or hydrogen.

Additionally, methods of sorbing aldehydes (i.e., aldehydes that are volatile under use conditions) on the polymeric sorbents and compositions resulting from the sorption of aldehydes on the polymeric sorbents are provided. The latex polymer compositions of the present invention exhibit latent crosslinking properties. Latent crosslinking in the polymers takes advantage of the fast interaction between the anionic latex charge and the cationic charge associated with polyfunctional amine crosslinkers. Once the latex is coated onto a substrate, the volatile base evaporates and the groups react to form a crosslinked coating with improved wash-off properties.

The present invention provides comb polymer compositions comprising phosphorus acid group containing backbone polymers of six-membered cyclic methacrylic imide having one or more side chain ether group containing n-substituent chosen from an ether group, a polyether group, an etheramine group, a polyetheramine group, an ether group crosslinking the backbone polymer chains, and a polyether group crosslinking the backbone polymer chains. The backbone polymers comprise from 60 to 100 wt.%, based on the total weight of monomers used to make the backbone polymer, of methacrylic acid polymerized units, regardless of their form, and from 7.5 to 95 wt.% of such polymerized units as methacrylic anhydride groups or six-membered cyclic methacrylic imide groups.

Sorbent polymeric material suitable for capturing formaldehyde, polymeric material resulting from the capture of formaldehyde by the sorbent polymeric material, and methods for capturing formaldehyde are provided. The sorbent polymeric material has multiple aromatic rings and can be formed by initially preparing a precursor polymeric material from a polymerizable composition that contains a free-radically polymerizable spirobisindane monomer. The precursor polymeric material is subsequently treated with a sulfonyl-containing compound to form groups of formula -SO 2 R 5 where each R 5 is independently -NH 2 or -NR 6 -Q-NR 6 R 7 . Each R 6 is hydrogen or an alkyl. Each R 7 is hydrogen or -C(=NH)-NH 2 . Each Q is a single bond, alkylene, or a group of formula -(Q 1 -NR 6 ) x -Q 2 - where each Q 1 is an alkylene, each Q 2 is an alkylene, and x is in an integer in a range of 1 to 4.

The graft polymer is a graft homopolymer, copolymer or terpolymer. Additionally, the presently disclosed and/or claimed inventive concept(s) relates to a scale inhibitor composition comprising the low molecular weight graft polymer. Furthermore, the presently disclosed and/or claimed inventive concept(s) relates to a process for preventing the deposition of scale from water or aqueous solution and a method for scale inhibition treatment of an oil or gas production well by using the low molecular weight graft polymer. The scale inhibitor is low corrosive for application in the oilfield.
