A method of preparing a poly(ester-carbonate) includes contacting an aqueous solution including a dicarboxylic acid with a first solution including phosgene and a first organic solvent in a tubular reactor to provide a first reaction mixture. A dihydroxy aromatic compound, the corresponding dialkali metal salt of the dihydroxy aromatic compound, or a combination comprising at least one of the foregoing, water, and a second organic solvent are combined to provide a second reaction mixture. The method further includes introducing the first reaction mixture, the second reaction mixture, and a second solution comprising phosgene to a tank reactor, wherein the tank reactor has a first pH of 7 to 10. The pH is optionally raised to 9 to 11 to provide a third reaction mixture including the poly(ester-carbonate). Poly(ester-carbonate)s prepared according to the method described herein are also disclosed.

The invention relates to polymers selected from among polypropylene (PP), polycarbonate (PC), acrylonitrile- butadiene-styrene (ABS), polyvinylchloride (PVC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), nylon and polystyrene, having antibacterial properties, wherein the antibacterial effect is obtained by adding a zinc salt selected from among: zinc PCA, zinc oxide, zinc hydroxide, zinc pyrrolidone or zinc pyrithione during the process of polymerization of the monomers. The antibacterial polymers are used to prepare products intended to enter into contact with the skin.

Thin walled products having good scratch resistance are disclosed, as are processes for making such products (e.g. films, sheets, and thin walled articles). The product includes a thin layer formed from (A) a cross-linkable polycarbonate resin having endcaps derived from a monohydroxybenzophenone; and (B) if desired, a base polymeric resin. When exposed to ultraviolet light, crosslinking will occur in the layer with the cross-linkable polycarbonate resin, enhancing the scratch resistance properties of the thin layer and the overall product.

Different interfacial processes for producing photoactive additives are disclosed. Generally, the photoactive additives are formed from a photoactive moiety, a first linker moiety, and a diol chain extender. The resulting additives can be crosslinked with other polymers upon exposure to UV radiation.
