This is achieved in that the synthesis gas is passed uncooled over a hot gas filter (2) and subsequently for cooling through a fire-tube boiler (3), wherein the ash/slag particles separated off at the hot gas filter (2) are recirculated in the direction of gravity back to the gasification reactor (2).

The apparatus reduces the particulate concentration in the gas stream by use of a low pressure drop device that operates at low gas velocities. On low temperature applications the unit could be mounted directly to the vessel wall, while for hot applications it would be supported from the cyclone system contained within the vessel.

A gasifier may also have a disengagement section that may be configured to separate fluidized media and particulate matter from syngas product. A gasification system may also include oxyblown catalytic autothermal reactor and a cryogenic air separation unit.

The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for cooling a material to be removed from the grate of a fluidized bed furnace. Material at a high temperature is passed from the grate of the fluidized bed furnace into a fluidized bed cooler in charges of a given size by measuring the quantity of the material accumulating in the fluidized bed cooler. When the quantity of the material in the cooler has reached a predetermined limit value, the supply of material into the fluidized bed cooler is prevented. The charge is cooled in the fluidized bed cooler by fluidization air and via heat transfer into a cooling liquid circulation system and the temperature of the charge is measured. The charge is removed when the temperature of the charge has fallen to a predetermined limit value.
