An oxygen carrier (OC) for use in Chemical Looping technology with Oxygen Uncoupling (CLOU) for the combustion of carbonaceous fuels, in which commercial grade metal oxides selected from the group consisting of Cu, Mn, and Co oxides and mixtures thereof constitute a primary oxygen carrier component. The oxygen carrier contains, at least, a secondary oxygen carrier component which is comprised by low-value industrial materials which already contain metal oxides selected from the group consisting of Cu, Mn, Co, Fe, Ni oxides or mixtures thereof. The secondary oxygen carrier component has a minimum oxygen carrying capacity of 1 g of O 2 per 100 g material in chemical looping reactions. Methods for the manufacture of the OC are also disclosed.

A catalyst cooler for cooling regenerated catalyst in a regenerator associated with a fluid catalytic cracking unit. The catalyst cooler includes a first passage for transporting hot regenerated catalyst away from the regenerator and a second passage for returning cooled regenerated catalyst to the regenerator. The catalyst cooler also includes at least one heat exchanger. The second passage may be disposed within the first passage, or the first and second passage may each occupy a portion of a horizontal cross section of the catalyst cooler.

The present invention relates to a process for capturing carbon dioxide from a gas stream. The gas stream is contacted with solid adsorbent particles in an adsorption zone. The adsorption zone has at least two beds of fluidized solid adsorbent particles, and the solid adsorbent particles are flowing downwards from bed to bed. The solid adsorbent particles comprise 15 to 75 weight% of organic amine compounds. The gas stream entering the adsorption zone has a dew point which is at least 5 °C below the forward flow temperature of the coolest cooling medium in the adsorption zone. Carbon dioxide enriched solid adsorbent particles are heated, and then regenerated. The desorption zone has at least two beds of fluidized solid adsorbent particles, and the stripping gas is steam. The regenerated particles are cooled and recycled to the adsorption zone.

A positive displacement device such as an auger 3 moves the bed material from the reduction side to the combustion side of the device below the fluidisation zone. The height of the two fluidised beds is equalised by movement of the bed material through a hole 4 In the vertical divider, from the high temperature side 1 (zone 1) to the tow temperature side 2 (zone 2). The bed material that moves through the hole 4 provides energy to drive reactions that may occur on the reduction side. Energy may also be provided to zone 2 by means of conductive and radiative heat transfer through the dividing wall 5. Energy is provided to zone 1 by means of an exothermic reaction, typically combustion of a fuel 13 using air 12.

Methods and fuel processing apparatuses for upgrading a pyrolysis oil stream and a hydrocarbon stream are provided herein. In an embodiment, a method for upgrading a pyrolysis oil stream and a hydrocarbon stream includes providing a pyrolysis oil stream and providing a hydrocarbon stream separate from the pyrolysis oil stream. The pyrolysis oil stream and the hydrocarbon stream are mixed in a mixing zone and in the absence of a particulate cracking catalyst. The pyrolysis oil stream and the hydrocarbon stream are introduced in a substantially common direction into the mixing zone to form a mixture of the pyrolysis oil stream and the hydrocarbon stream. The mixture of the pyrolysis oil stream and the hydrocarbon stream are catalytically cracked in the presence of the particulate cracking catalyst.
