Coal ash, which also consists of fly ash, is a very fine granular solid residue obtained as a by-product of coal combustion. The invention relates to the surprising result that a fuel can be obtained from coal ash. The process involves a pneumatic separation of the coal ash at relatively low temperatures. The coal ash is separated into at least two size fractions. The size fractions obtained by the process of this invention include at least one with lower carbon and another containing increased levels of carbon in the range of 50% by weight and a heating value in the range of 4000 to 6000 Btu/lb.

Markieren (Codieren) von Pellets vorgeschlagen,um Pelletchargen hoher Qualität einwandfrei von Pelletlieferungen minderer Qualität unterscheiden zu können, damit überprüft werden kann, ob Lieferungen einzelner Hersteller oder Händler vorgegebenen Qualitätsnormen entsprechen. Hierzu werden den Pellets Codierelemente beigemischt oder die Pellets mit Codierungen versehen, die es ermöglichen, die Herkunft von Pellets minderer Qualität bis zum Hersteller zurückzuverfolgen.

Combustible packages for containing a fuel source and a fire started are provided. A combustible package may include a cardboard outer wall and top and bottom lids for substantially closing top and bottom openings defined by the outer wall. Each lid may define a central panel for extending across an opening and a plurality of tabs for facilitating a press fit between the lids and the outer wall. Each lid may also define a central opening for receiving an end of a fire starter. The fire starter may be wound paper tube impregnated with an accelerant. The fuel source may be a plurality of charcoal briquettes contained between the outer wall, the top and bottom lids and the fire starter. The outer wall may define one or more ventilation openings between the bottom edge and the bottom lid. Or the bottom edge may be scalloped to provide ventilation openings.

The present invention relates to a novel encapsulated solid fuel particularly useful for cupola and blast furnaces for, e.g. mineral and metal ore melting. The present invention also relates to the preparation of such an encapsulated solid fuel and to the use of the encapsulated solid fuel in a mineral melting furnace process. More particularly, the invention relates to an encapsulated solid fuel, said fuel comprising a core portion comprising at least 50% by volume of one or more carbonaceous fuel material(s) (e.g. coke, PETcoke, charcoal, anthracite, bituminous coal, lower rank coals, waste material, and biofuels), and a shell portion comprising a least 60% by volume of one or more mineral material(s) (e.g. olivine, basalt, diabase, gabbro, slag, limestone, waste stone wool, fly-ash, sand and cement).
