Method and apparatus for the measurement of moisture or water content electrically so that, in the material to be studied, an electrical field is generated by means of the electrodes of the measurement head (1) and that the moisture or the water content is determined as the effect of the material to be studied on the electrical properties (Rm, Cm) of the measurement head (1). The objective of the invention is to avoid mechanical weighing or standardization of a sample taken out of the material to be measured, to be performed before the measurement operation proper, as well as the extra mechanical equipment required for such operations. The problem has been solved by performing the measurement so that the degree of filling of the measurement head (1) is changed and the capacitance (Cm) of the measurement head, varying along with the quantity of the material to be studied, is measured and, when the capacitance reaches a predetermined value (Ca), the resistance (Rm) of the sensing element (1) is measured, by means of which resistance the moisture of the material to be studied is determined. The invention can be applied especially to the moisture-measurement of grain, but also to the measurement of moisture of seeds, hay, soil, peat, sand, wood, chips, and sawdust, as well as for moisture measurements of various powders in production processes. The invention can also be applied to the measurement of the water content, e.g., of silage, water-containing emulsions and mixtures.

Ein Verfahren zum Messen des Mischungsverhältnisses eines Stoffgemisches aus mindestens zwei Stoffen (10, 11), ist im Hinblick auf einen möglichst einfachen Messaufbau und zum Erreichen einer möglichst geringen Beeinflussung des Mischvorgangs oder des Stofftransports derart ausgestaltet, dass das Stoffgemisch in den Messbereich eines kapazitiven Sensors (1) gebracht - insbesondere an diesem vorbei- oder durch diesen hindurchbewegt - wird und dass aus der durch das Stoffgemisch hervorgerufenen Veränderung der Kapazität des Sensors (1) das Mischungsverhältnis bestimmt wird. Eine entsprechende Sensoranordnung, bei der das Stoffgemisch durch einen schlauchförmigen Bereich (2) geführt wird, ist angegeben.

Herein is described a method for identifying semiconductor radiation detector materials based on the mobility of internally generated electrons and holes. It was designed for the early stages of exploration, when samples are not available as single crystals, but as crystalline powders. Samples are confined under pressure in an electric field and the increase in current resulting from exposure to a high-intensity source of ionization current (e.g., 60 Co gamma rays) is measured. A pressure cell device is described herein to carry out the method. For known semiconductors, the d.c. ionization current depends on voltage according to the Hecht equation, and for known insulators the d.c. ionization current is below detection limits. This shows that the method can identify semiconductors in spite of significant carrier trapping. Using this method and pressure cell, it was determined that new materials BiOI, PbIF, BiPbO 2 Cl, BiPbO 2 Br, BiPbO 2 I, Bi 2 GdO 4 Cl, Pb 3 O 2 I 2 , and Pb 5 O 4 I 2 arc semiconductors.

A moisture-sensing apparatus comprises a housing (10) which contains a moisture-sensing element (15). The housing has, at its upper end, an inlet (14) for flowable material and has, at its lower end, means (16) defining an outward flow path for material within the housing. The housing incorporates means to control the packing density of flowable material within the housing. Thus the upper part of the housing is provided with a cover (13) having an upper surface (12) which prevents direct pressure being applied to material within the housing, the inlet to the housing being defined by apertures (14) which lie in a substantially vertical plane.
