The problem of 3D panel display systems either (a) requiring special glasses to separate left and right viewing images, or (b) having auto-stereoscopic 3D with compromised fidelity, is solved by providing a projection three dimensional (3D) display system for providing glass-free, 3D display to a plurality of viewing volumetric pairs (VVAs) in space corresponding to a hypothetical plurality of viewers' eye aperture pairs, the projection 3D display system comprising: (a) a dual-image projector configured to project both a left viewing tri-color image and a right viewing tri-color image; and (b) means for (1) receiving a tri-color mixed input beam encompassing the left and right viewing tri-color images, (2) multiplying the tri-color mixed input beam into a plurality of tri-color mixed output beams, and (3) focusing the plurality of tri-color mixed beams for viewing at the VVAs.

A display backlight comprises an edge-lit lightguide having an array of light out-coupling structures to enable light to escape from the lightguide at the location of the light out-coupling structures. A light source arrangement is used for providing light into the lightguide at one or both of the opposite side edges. The light source arrangement is controllable to provide a selected one of at least first and second light outputs into the lightguide, the two light outputs having a different angle to the general plane of the lightguide and resulting in light which escapes from the lightguide with a different range of exit angles. In this way, a directional backlight output is enabled, based on the way light is coupled into a lightguide. This provides a simple structure only requiring control of the light provided to the lightguide. The backlight may for example enable an autostereoscopic display to be formed without the need for a lenticular array.
摘要:
A viewing apparatus for producing a stereoscopic image for an observer, the viewing apparatus comprising : first and second video projectors for projecting respective ones of first and second video images of an object, the first and second images being different images which are one or both of spatially and angularly shifted in relation to the object so as to convey parallax between the images; a mirror arrangement comprising a concave mirror which receives light from the first and second video projectors, the mirror arrangement being located in relation to the first and second video projectors such that focussed images of the object are produced at the mirror arrangement; and a viewing lens for relaying exit pupils corresponding to each of the focussed images as reflected by the mirror arrangement to a viewing plane so as to be viewable at the respective eyes of the observer as a stereoscopic image without use of adapted eyewear; wherein the video projectors comprise first and second video displays which are driven by first and second video signals to display respective ones of the first and second video images, and first and second optical arrangements for focussing light from the respective images as displayed by the first and second displays to the mirror arrangement.
