The coupling portion (A) includes a piston (10) that is movable between a first position and a second position, a resilient member (12) for biasing the piston to the first position and a magnet (14) for retaining the piston at the second position. In one embodiment, the piston may be disposed in a body of the optical connection. The piston may be formed from a ferrous material and since it is not magnetic it does not attract metal trash; however, it still allows coupling (e.g., mating) of optical connections using magnetic retention. Additionally, the piston may optionally include a cover portion (101) if desired.

The invention also relates to optical components containing a light-conducting fibre of this kind, and to a method for producing the inventive light-conducting fibres. According to one embodiment of the invention, a splitter is formed with an input fibre and two output fibres, these two output fibres each having a half-ring-shaped cross-section. The two half-ring-shaped light-conducting fibres surround the input fibres.
