This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for powering display light sources (410). A display can include a DC/DC converter (406) included in a power management integrated circuit (PMIC 400) to serve as the light source driver. Battery current drawn by the DC/DC converter (406) can be smoothed, in part, by introducing a capacitor (412) in parallel with the set of light sources (410). A display controller can control the DC/DC converter to output a substantially constant current for substantially the entirety of a time period for displaying a set of subframes, storing enough charge on the capacitor (412) to support the current drawn through the light sources (410) by a digital-to-analog converter (DAC 404) included in the PMIC. Output current level for the DC/DC converter can be determined for the time period over which the subframes are displayed. The set of subframes can include subframes of a single image frame, or of one or more image frames.

The enclosure houses the LED illumination based electronic display device, filter screen and the partially transparent and partially reflective viewing surface. The filter screen is positioned close to the surface of the LED illumination based electronic display device. The LED illumination based electronic display device projects a primary real image onto the filter screen and is optically transmitted onto the partially transparent and partially reflective viewing surface. The partially transparent and partially reflective viewing surface reflects a secondary virtual 3D image perceivable on the opposite side of the partially transparent and partially reflective viewing surface to the LED illumination based electronic display device.

Techniques for driving a dual modulation display include generating backlight drive signals to drive individually-controllable illumination sources. The illumination sources emit first light onto a light conversion layer. The light conversion layer converts the first light into second light. The light conversion layer can include quantum dots or phosphor materials. Modulation drive signals are generated to determine transmission of the second light through individual subpixels of the display. These modulation drive signals can be adjusted based on one or more light field simulations. The light field simulations can include: (i) a color shift for a pixel based on a point spread function of the illumination sources; (ii) binning difference of individual illumination sources; (iii) temperature dependence of display components on performance; or (iv) combinations thereof.
