Systems and methods are described for providing data to the multiple LED blocks of a LED display board. Each LED block can include an electrical connection or interface that has a reduced complexity compared with prior LED display boards. Six pins may be used for the connections between blocks - including a ground pin, an input/output (I/O) pin, two video link pins, and two communication link pins. Systems and methods are described for controlling the power supplied to LED block(s) of a LED display board. A power controller coordinates the supply of power to the LED blocks. The power controller controls the supply of power to selected groups of the blocks of a video board in a way to reduce the differences in peak instantaneous power supplied to sections of the display board or the entire display board itself, and thereby increase the useful service life of the power supply components.

Techniques are provided to provide various pulse width modulation (PWM) schemes to embodiments of dual modulator display systems that may comprise a backlight of individually addressable and controllable light emitters. The backlight provides illumination to a light modulator for further conditioning of the light to be presented to a viewer. The backlight may be striped and each stripe is assigned a PWM scheme that effectively increases the bit depth of the controller for each stripe. The display system may allow a better matching of PWM periods to LCD frame rates to reduce visual artifacts. In another embodiment, the display system may detect a small bright feature to be rendered in the image data and, with a pre-assignment of light emitters to different partitions, the backlight controller may drive a subset of the light emitters according to the partitions.

Drive signals for a display device may be generated using Separable Nonnegative Matrix Series Representation (SNMSR) of source image data and applying a non- negative matrix factorization (NNMF) process to source image data to generate approximation image data (I i ), partial sum image data (P i ) and residue image data (J i ). Iteratively, NNMF may be applied to J i such that subsequent I i and J i may be generated, where each I i can be associated with a corresponding sub-frame image. At each iteration, the I i may be sent to the display buffer for selective activation of multiple row and column drivers during a single sub-frame interval. At each iteration, a determination may be made if a predetermined criterion is satisfied. The iterations may be terminated and the series truncated when the predetermined criterion is satisfied. Integration of the sub-frame images displayed over a complete frame interval by human eye effectively corresponds to the source image.
