Modern X-ray generators are required to deliver a peak power between 30 kW and 120 kW. This requirement places demanding constraints on the design of the power inverters used to supply such X-ray generators, at the same time that there exist industry incentives to reduce the size of X-ray generators. An trend towards increased frequencies of switching operation in the power stage of modern X-ray generators makes it possible to use air-core inductors, rather than magnetic-core inductors. This application discusses an air-core inductor assembly having an integral current sensor. According to this application, a current sensor can be more accurately provided, which does not drift in position over time, and in a way which reduces the overall bill of materials.

A power converter controller and methods for its operation are provided that can control a self-oscillating power converter that uses a Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) as a switch by manipulating the current flowing in a control winding. The controller is able to determine the optimum time to remove a short circuit applied to the control winding, as well as being able to determine the optimum time to pass current through the control winding. The controller can further draw power from the power converter using the control winding. The controller is capable of maintaining the midpoint voltage of the power converter in the case that the converter has more than one switch. The controller estimates the output power of the converter without requiring a connection to the secondary side of the converter transformer. The controller further controls entry and exit into a low-power mode in which converter oscillations are suppressed.

A coreless coil is wound around outside of the tap of capacitance plate in the capacitor voltage-divider insulator to measure the current; or the low voltage signal is taken out from the capacitance plate near the tap in the capacitor voltage-divider insulator to measure the voltage, then the received current signals or the volatage signals are transformed into the optical signal by a converter that invertes the acquired current signal or the volatage signal into optical signal and are then outputted. The coreless coil as a current sensor has the ground potential and the capacitor as a volatage sensor has the low potential.
