A system and method is disclosed for a personal radio recorder. The personal radio recorder allows for random access of communication signals by identifying a channel and time. The personal radio recorder is capable of concurrent reception, storage and playback of a complete spectrum of individual communication signals. A wide-band signal is received, and concurrently demodulated into a plurality of individual communication signals. These audio signals are identified by channel and time. Individual signals may be simultaneously played, paused, or stored for later playback. Compression may be used to make efficient use of storage. Storage may be fixed, removable, or a combination of both. The system is also capable of storing signals that are already digitally formatted, and is compatible with existing analog or digital playback devices. The personal radio recorder may playback multiple channels of communications data, either previously recorded or currently broadcast, to multiple output stages at the same time.

The functionality of a removable faceplate on an entertainment system, such as a vehicular radio, is enhanced beyond its typical theft-prevention function. In a first embodiment, the removable faceplate contains a rendering system, such as an audio amplifier and headphones, for rendering content material. In this embodiment, the removable faceplate may contain a tuner device for receiving broadcast content material. In another embodiment, the removable faceplate contains a memory device that can be used to play back recorded content material, or to store-and-forward information or content material to or from the base unit. In another embodiment, the faceplate contains a "buy" switch that can be used to create a purchase request for an item that is associated with the received broadcast content material, and the memory device is used to store-and-forward this purchase request to a vendor via a base station.

An intelligent radio apparatus (100) that is adapted to receive Web radio broadcasts is disclosed. The Web Radio provides a user interface that is less like a computer program and more like a conventional radio, thus making the device easy to use. Rather than the complicated user interface found on Personal computers, the intelligent radio provides familiar radio-type user controls such as switches (120), a tuning knob (114), joysticks, cursor controls (116), voice activated controls, etc. The radio-type user controls allow the user to select a Web radio station and control other aspects of the operation of the intelligent radio (100) in a manner that is more like a conventional radio and less like a computer program. The intelligent radio (100) is configured to run the software needed to access the Internet and thus relieves the user of complicated software installation tasks such as installing and configuring an operating system and installing and configuring Internet access software. The intelligent radio also provides Internet telephony, voicemail, and voice-email capabilities.
