Abstract:
Method and system for enabling different information-containing units such as advertisements, to be included in or otherwise presented in conjunction with broadcast content so that individuals receiving the same content can be presented with different information. A suitable information unit for each individual is independently selected based on information about each user. For example, when the broadcast content is on multiple channels and the user's terminal is receiving content on one channel having information that is not suitable for that user, the individual's terminal may be directed to switch to another channel selected from among a plurality of different channels based on the user's settings, profile and/or rules. As such, the information, or data units, being provided to each user can be customized thereby providing an extremely effective form of direct and targeted advertising in the broadcast of various content, such as television programs, radio programs, data, videos and audio.
Abstract:
A terminal (102) is able to receive data from a broadcast station (104) and can simultaneously participate in a wireless network via transmissions to a wireless base station (106). The terminal is able to determine time periods when data of interest to the terminal will be broadcast. It then schedules transmissions to the base station to avoid these time periods, thereby avoiding the transmissions preventing reception of the data of interest. The time periods may be determined from scheduling information transmitted by the broadcast station or a range of other means.
Abstract:
A system for distributing digital data over a video channel to a plurality of remotely located client terminals (18). The system involves selecting a set of digital data to be distributed and converting it to an intermediate format compatible with video broadcast. The intermediate data is then broadcast over a video channel during a time when no video content is being transmitted so that the intermediate format data takes the place of the video content. The intermediate format data is received at a remotely located client terminals (18) where the set of digital data is recovered.
Abstract:
Television program data is intermittently downloaded to a plurality of user terminals equipped with a data receiver (34), a memory (22) for storing television program data, an on-screen electronic program guide generator (19), a microprocessor (24), and a television monitor (20) for displaying television programs and an electronic program guide. The data receivers are normally powered off and powered on at regular intervals to receive transmitted program data. The transmitted program data is stored in the memory (22). The microprocessor (24) is configured to transfer television program data from the memory (22) to the generator in response to user commands and to control the generator to generate a video drive signal representative of an on-screen television program guide. The drive signal is coupled to the generator to the monitor to display the on-screen program guide. Various regimes are employed to turn the tuner on and off.
