A system and method provide the ability to collect, store and transmit information statements concerning satellite communication system use. The satellite system may collect billing information, such as roaming data, network use in terms of both total time and total bandwidth and functionality utilized on a user by user basis. Further, the satellite system may collect network usage information from the totality of users of a satellite system. The billing information and network usage information may be collected and stored on-board satellite(s) in a network in a data structure including a database. This information may then be collected, organized and transmitted to a variety of users in the earth segment of the system.

A communication satellite cellular coverage pointing correction using uplink beacon signal is provided. A ground-based beacon transmits a monopulse tracking signal or a Traveling Wave Coupler (TWC) tracking signal to a specialized tracking feed section located within each uplink and downlink antennae of a satellite. From the monopulse or TWC tracking signal, a pointing correction is determined for each reflector, for example, the angle off boresight and the angle between the present beam direction and the target direction. Each reflector is then gimbaled to re-point the reflector to the target area. In this way, both uplink and downlink antennae are provided with closed loop control over antenna pointing.

A system for directing an antenna (111) for transmission over a two-way satellite network is disclosed. A transceiver (109) is coupled to the antenna (111); the transceiver (109) transmits and receives signals over the two-way satellite network. A user terminal (101) is coupled to the transceiver (109) and executes an antenna pointing program. The program instructs a user to initially point the antenna (111) to a beacon satellite (107) using predefined pointing values based upon the location of the antenna (111). The program receives new antenna pointing parameters that are downloaded from a hub (113) over a temporary channel that is established via the beacon satellite (107). The program displays the new antenna pointing parameters and instructs the user to selectively re-point the antenna (111) based upon the downloaded new antenna pointing parameters.

In a satellite network with on-board switching and bandwidth on demand, traffic monitoring is required to facilitate billing data collection and to avoid congestion at the satellite. In addition to traffic monitoring, performance monitoring is necessary to quickly respond to link degradation or possible equipment anomalies. Monitoring terminals (MTS) specially equipped with traffic measuring and policing and link performance measuring capabilities are used to monitor traffic and performance. The monitoring terminal (MTS) is located in each satellite beam to perform the monitoring functions for that beam. The monitoring terminals (MTS) are low-cost terminals that receive down-link traffic in their respective beam, and record statistics on a per transmit-terminal or per virtual connection basis. Records are periodically transmitted to a central location where they are processed for billing, enforcing traffic contracts, and taking actions against link degradations.

The invention provides a method and system for simplified signal processing between the feed horn assembly and the frame relay equipment. Data is directly modulated from the frame relay equipment onto an L-band carrier and block up-converted for output at the feed horn. Block up-conversion is aided by adding a DC power signal and a 10.0 megahertz frequency reference signal to the L-band modulated signal (so as to protect the frequency reference against variations due to external elements), while maintaining spectral purity of the L-band modulated signal.
