Abstract:
A method and apparatus utilized in layer 2 access switches of an Ethernet ring-based network to bridge multicast packets between a multicast VLAN and a selected VLAN coupled to a VLAN trunk port of the layer 2 access switch. The duplication of multicast streams over the ring technology is avoided while maintaining isolation between subscribers.
Abstract:
An access node for an Ethernet network is connected between an access point of user devices and a broadband remote access server for access to a plurality of service providng networks. It includes a VLAN handling unit having a memory for storing identifications of Ethernet frames transmitted in a first VLAN including the access node and a local virtual router function unit of of the access server in a second VLANs. Each of the second VLANs including the access node, the local virtual router function unit and one of the virtual router function units of the access server for each of the virtual router function units. A control unit commands the handling unit to transmit frames from a new user device that has connected itself to the access point into the first virtrual local area network. The control unit also receives information from the access server in respect of routing frames and its commands to the handling unit to transmit frames from user device which is connected to the access point and the frames from which are transmitted into the first VLAN to be instead transmitted into one of th esecond VLAN as given by the information received from the broadband remote access server, the frames thereby being transmitted to the server of the respective service providing network.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus enables legacy NSP and other networks which use ATM switches that lack multicasting capabilities to acquire and distribute IP multicast transmissions to content subscribers on ATM DSL networks. The method and apparatus further provides the ability for insertion of local advertising content into received IP streams for subsequent distribution over an ATM network. An IP ATM Multicaster (IAM) converts IP multicast signals to ATM protocol and replicates the converted IP multicast packets in response to IGMP join requests received from one or more prospective multicast content recipients. The IAM acts as a bridge between IP protocol and ATM protocol environments that handles conversions and encapsulation protocols between environments. An alternate embodiment utilizes an ATM IP Multicast Inserter (AIMI) that embodies similar functions as the IAM but without using multiple virtual circuits. A local Ad Inserter (LAI) is provided for enabling insertion of advertisements into the IP multicast data stream prior to insertion into the ATM network.

Abstract:
A communications network (e.g. fibre to the home (FTTH) or wireless) comprises a head end, to which outstations are coupled via a shared point-to-multipoint medium. The head end is arranged to transmit downstream to the outstations a sequence of frames comprising data frames and command frames. The command frames marshal control of upstream transmissions from the outstations. A first downstream command frame directed to a specific outstation indicates the beginning of a timeslot, and also indicates the time slot duration (including an indefinite duration). Where the duration is indefinite, a second command frame directed to at least the same outstation indicates the end of the allotted time slot. Further methods are provided to optimise timeslot allocation, and to support addition and removal of outstations on the network.
Abstract:
The present invention encompasses a proxi for providing an IP address to a computer (100) configured for operation on a wide area network using a local area network address assignment format. The method allows a subscriber side network terminal to receive from a locally attached computer (100) an IP address request in a wide area network compatible format and to obtain from a remote server an IP address using a local area network compatible request.
