A method for decoding a set of packets asynchronously on same nominal carrier frequency transmitted over a common communication medium, receives a signal including a combination of the set of packets modified with noise of the common communication medium, each packet includes a preamble common to all packets in the set and a payload unique for at least some packets in the set. The method determines, using a sparse recovery, a frequency offset of the transmission of each packet from the carrier frequency, a time offset of the transmission of each packet from a common point in time, and a channel gain corresponding to the transmission of each packet over a channel in the common communication medium and decodes the payloads of the packets in the set using the frequency offsets, the time offsets, and the channel gains.

A two-stage approach to MIMO detection improves receiver performance in a computationally tractable manner. A whitening joint detector processes a MIMO symbol stream. The whitening joint detector includes a pre-filter operative to suppress a first subset of the received MIMO streams as colored noise. The whitening joint detector further includes a primary joint detector operative to process a second subset of the MIMO streams and to output a preliminary solution obtained by minimizing a whitening joint detection metric. A secondary detector then operates in the vicinity of the primary joint detector preliminary solution. The secondary detector improves the preliminary solution by comparison to a full detection metric.

The initial mixing matrix is evaluated to determine a minimum rank that is necessary for at least one source signal to be useable after having been separated from the initial mixing matrix and decoded. An additional mixing matrix is then formed, and also includes the different summations of the source signals. If the rank of the additional mixing matrix is less than the minimum rank associated with the initial mixing matrix, then the source signals are modified so that the rank of the additional mixing matrix is increased.

The reduced complexity search is based on the triangular matrix.
