Abstract:
A media interaction system is described herein that allows hosted applications to consume and/or produce rich media content independent of the format of the media content, while still maintaining the security of the host. The media interaction system accepts raw, uncompressed media data from a hosted application, and allows the hosted application to provide its own codec through a sandboxed API that restricts the actions the codec can perform to a set of trusted actions. Then, the application provides the uncompressed data to the system for playback. Thus, the media interaction system provides rich media content in any format that the application developer supports, and maintains the security of the user's computer system.
Abstract:
A set top box is provided that includes an RF front-end for receiving programming content over a distribution communication network. A processor is operatively associated with the RF front-end and a storage device is operatively associated with the processor. An interface is provided for establishing communication with an external device. In response to a signal received from the distribution network over the RF front-front identifying at least one programming object to be downloaded thereto, the processor is configured to locate and receive the programming object from the external device through the interface.

A method and apparatus to configure, provision and control a settop terminal using a wireless web appliance is provided where a wireless communications path is established between the wireless web appliance and the set-top terminal. The set-top terminal is arranged to communicate with a headend controller over a bi-directional communication link having both upstream and downstream communication paths. A configuration change is implemented in response to an unsolicited message that is generated by the set-top terminal and received by the headend controller over the upstream communications path. The configuration change is implemented at the headend, or at the set-top terminal by downloading configuration data from the headend controller over the downstream communication path. The set-top terminal transmits the unsolicited message in response to a control signal generated by the wireless web appliance that is received over the wireless communications path.

A cable communication system makes use of a download control message to indicate whether a code object should be downloaded to a set top box via an in-band channel or via an out-of-band channel. In one version, the system includes means for adaptively determining whether to use an in-band channel or an out-of-band channel. The related method includes the steps of receiving a message designating whether to tune to an in-band or an out-of-band channel in order to receive the code object, tuning to the designated channel, and receiving the code object from the designated channel.
