Abstract: The present invention relates to nucleic acid sequences which have a transcriptional promoter activity preferentially in the phloem of plants under conditions of stress, or in the roots, to derived sequences, to constructs containing such sequences, and also to cells transformed with said constructs and to transgenic plants. The present invention makes it possible to place any transgene under the transcriptional control of a promoter, the activity of which is tissue-specific, organ-specific and/or inducible by environmental factors, such as biotic or abiotic stresses.

Abstract: Root watering systems and apparatus thereof is configured to conserve water, deliver additives to the roots and aerate both the roots and the soil for healthy plant growth. Root watering apparatus comprises a hollow, elongated perforated shaft having unitary construction or at least one detachable segment, and further provided with a metallic tapering end for facilitating deep penetration into the earth. A diffusion membrane can be lined internally in the shaft to permit flow of water and additives into the soil, prevent soil or the roots from entering the shaft and prevent weed growth. At least one nozzle is coupled to the shaft and can be configured to facilitate coupling of the apparatus in series with other such apparatus and at least one circulatory system comprising an arrangement of porous pipes. The root watering system comprises a plurality of root watering apparatus coupled in series to provide fluid communication therebetween.

Abstract: An irrigation system (30) for watering a substrate (S), comprising a pipe (31) having a longitudinal dimension. A hermetically closeable inlet portion (32) is connected to a water supply. A passageway (34) extends generally throughout the longitudinal dimension and is in fluid communication with the inlet portion (32) such that water can fill the passageway (34). Openings (35) are in fluid communication with the passageway (34) such that water in the passageway (34) can exit the pipe (31) through the openings (35). The openings (35) are distributed along the longitudinal dimension of the pipe (31), the pipe (31) being adapted to be at least partially buried in the substrate (S) with said longitudinal dimension being generally horizontal. Porous members (36) are secured to an outer periphery of the pipe (31) so as to each cover one of the openings (35) and so as to be in contact with the substrate (S) such that water flows out of the passageway (34) through the openings (35) and the porous member (36) and into the substrate (S) as a result of a capillary action of the substrate (S).

Abstract: Crop-specific automated irrigation include environmental medium and management of nutrients. Operation of an irrigation apparatus can be regulated according to specific water demand of a crop. The water demand can be assessed by evaluating water content conditions of the environmental medium comprising the crop, medium characteristics, and/or nutrient delivery and transport characteristics at the medium. Regulation of operation of the irrigation apparatus can comprise control of one or more of water supply to the apparatus, positioning and/or movement of the irrigation apparatus, or configuration of sensing devices for collection of information suitable for such regulation.

Abstract: A turf management system includes an irrigation system for providing water to the turf at a turf site, and an irrigation evaluation system for evaluating the performance of the irrigation system. The irrigation evaluation system segments the turf site into irrigation management units, where each of the irrigation management units includes at least one sprinkler head. Qualities of the turf are measured to generate collected data points. The data points are used by the irrigation evaluation system to compute a value for the turf in each of the irrigation management units. The values can then be used to identify irrigation management units having common characteristics. The values can be used to define irrigation management zones for controlling the irrigation system.
