    Abstract: A configuration of a direct drive lawnmower spindle assembly to protect sensitive electric motor components is provided. A spindle shaft of the spindle assembly is supported by upper and lower bearings. An upper end of the spindle shaft is mounted to a rotor of the electric motor and a lower end of the spindle shaft extends through the clearance opening. The lower bearing is supported by a lower bearing carrier that is mounted to the bottom of the spindle housing. The lower bearing can be serviced by removing the lower bearing carrier. A clearance gap between the spindle shaft and the clearance opening is sufficiently small to limit spindle shaft tipping to a degree that will not damage the motor. The invention also provides a friction coupling system for coupling a blade with the rotating spindle shaft.

    Abstract: A lawn mower includes a cutting deck with first and second cutting blades to form clippings beneath the cutting deck and a baffle system to direct the clipping through a discharge opening. The baffle system includes a baffle wall that at least partially surrounds the first and second cutting blades to define first and second cutting chambers. The baffle wall includes a front baffle wall portion having a front guide surface to guide the clippings from the first and second cutting chambers towards the discharge opening, and a rear baffle wall portion having a concave guide surface and an end positioned between the first cutting chamber and the discharge opening. A discharge transition area is positioned between the first cutting chamber and the discharge opening.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for using interchangeable tool attachments in multi-use tools. In one embodiment, a multi-use tool includes a motor, a shaft and a shaft adapter at the end of the shaft. The motor has user controls (e.g., on/off switch or throttle) that control the motor to drive the shaft and cause it to rotate. The shaft may include a rigid tubular outer member with a flexible inner shaft. The shaft adapter is coupled to the end of the rotating portion of the shaft and has a mounting flange that rotates with the adapter at the end of the shaft. An interchangeable tool attachment is secured to the mounting flange, and rotation of the shaft adapter and mounting flange causes the tool attachment to rotate. Many different tool attachments can be interchangeably secured to the mounting flange to provide corresponding, different functions to the tool.
