    Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus and method for additive manufacturing. The apparatus comprises a work surface, a material depositing device for depositing a layer of powder material onto the work surface or onto a previous deposited layer of powder material, and an energy directing device configured to direct an energy beam towards the work surface. The method comprises the steps of: depositing a first powder material in a first pattern which corresponds to a cross-section surface of the to be manufactured object, depositing a second powder material in a second pattern such that the first and second powder material together provide a continues layer of powder material, wherein the material of the second powder is different from the material of the first powder, and irradiating said layer of powder material by the energy beam in order to meld at least a part of the first powder material only.

    Abstract: A powder re-coater apparatus for depositing powder layers in an AM installation includes an elongate, horizontally disposed recoating device mounted for sideways or lateral movement above a deposition surface of the installation under the action of a drive system. The recoating device has a housing defining an elongate chamber for holding powder, a dispensing opening along a base of the housing, and a metering member extending within the chamber, along the opening and operable to provide a controlled flow of powder through the opening during lateral movement of the recoating device to deposit a coating over the deposition surface. The apparatus further includes an elongate powder spreader device parallel to the recoating device and mounted for sideways or lateral movement closely juxtaposed to the surface. The spreader device is operable to spread powder from regions of excess thickness in a coating to ensure each coating is of uniform thickness.

    Abstract: A method of controlling a binder jet printer, wherein the binder jet printer comprises a build box with a powder bed, and a powder supply for supplying the powder bed with powder. The binder jet printer further comprises a leveling device configured to level the powder supplied to the build box from the powder supply, a print head for dispensing binder to the powder bed such that a green body is formed by the dispensed binder and the powder in the powder bed. The method comprises: supplying powder to the powder bed from the powder supply and leveling the powder with the leveling device; dispensing binder by means of the print head to the powder bed to form a layer of said green body, wherein the layer comprises at least one shape, which at least one shape comprises binder and powder and is delimited by at least one edge, wherein the at least one shape has a saturation of dispensed binder in an area closer to any one edge that is higher than the saturation of dispensed binder in an area further away from any one edge of the at least one shape.

    Abstract: Additive manufacturing systems are described with temperature control systems, suspension systems, and/or couplings between the powder container and a stationary frame of the system that facilitate vibration of the powder container and agitation of powder in the powder container. A powder supply assembly for an additive manufacturing system that manufactures an object on a build platform from a powder can include a powder container configured to retain a powder and having a supply outlet facing the build platform, and a flow control assembly configured to control a flow of powder from the powder container toward the build platform. Wherein the powder container comprises a temperature control element to maintain the powder container within a selected temperature range.
