Abstract: We describe a method for controlling an irradiation beam for irradiating a layer of raw material powder in an additive layer manufacturing process for producing a three-dimensional work piece, wherein the method comprises: depositing, with a layer depositing mechanism, a said layer of raw material powder on top of a carrier and/or on top of a preceding material layer on top of the carrier; and controlling the irradiation beam to irradiate at least a portion of the layer of raw material powder in an irradiation area when a distance between the irradiation area and the layer depositing mechanism is above a threshold distance, and wherein the threshold distance is dependent on (i) a speed of movement of the layer depositing mechanism, and (ii) a speed, vg, of a gas flow over the layer of raw material powder.

Abstract: A powder re-coater apparatus for depositing powder layers in an AM installation includes an elongate, horizontally disposed recoating device mounted for sideways or lateral movement above a deposition surface of the installation under the action of a drive system. The recoating device has a housing defining an elongate chamber for holding powder, a dispensing opening along a base of the housing, and a metering member extending within the chamber, along the opening and operable to provide a controlled flow of powder through the opening during lateral movement of the recoating device to deposit a coating over the deposition surface. The apparatus further includes an elongate powder spreader device parallel to the recoating device and mounted for sideways or lateral movement closely juxtaposed to the surface. The spreader device is operable to spread powder from regions of excess thickness in a coating to ensure each coating is of uniform thickness.

Abstract: Disclosed embodiments relate to recoater systems for use with additive manufacturing systems. A recoater assembly may be used to deposit a material layer onto a build surface of an additive manufacturing system. In some instances, the recoater assembly may include a powder entrainment system that trails behind a recoater blade of the recoater assembly relative to a direction of motion of the recoater blade across a build surface of the additive manufacturing system. The powder entrainment system may generate a flow of fluid across a portion of the build surface behind the recoater blade that at least temporarily entrains powder above a threshold height from the build surface to mitigate, or prevent, the formation of defects on the build surface with heights greater than the threshold height.
