Abstract: Apparatus for AM production includes a support platform mounted for motorized movement; a direct metal deposition system having a metal deposition head carried above the platform by a multi-axis robotic arm mounted adjacent the support platform and operable to move the deposition head relative to the platform in a three-axis co-ordinate system; and CPU providing integration of CNC operation of the deposition system in depositing successive superimposed layers of metal to build or repair a component. The CPU is operable to integrate movement of the support platform relative to the X-Y plane of the co-ordinate system and actuation of the robotic arm to adjust the deposition head along the Z-axis after each layer is deposited, with closed loop control whereby each successive layers replicate a respective slice of the component, or part, in accordance with a CAD description. The apparatus further includes a unit that enables physical properties of deposited metal to be varied by in situ forging/micro-rolling of each, or selected layers prior to deposition of the next layer.

Abstract: An AM installation utilising SLM or SLS a chamber of a housing with a protective atmosphere, a support structure in the chamber defines an upper horizontal surface on which a laser source is operable for focusing onto predetermined regions of a build area of the plane of the horizontal surface. The laser beam source is operable so areas of each of successive layers of powder material are sintered or fully molten throughout its layer thickness. A dosing device raises successive quantities of powder to the level of the upper surface to enable a re-coater to form the layers. A separable build device unit defines build chamber opening at the upper surface, and includes a lift table and an electric drive by which the lift table is stepwise vertically adjustable so a progressively built component is lowerable into the build chamber.

Abstract: Apparatus for the deposition of successive layers of a powder material onto a print bed to enable the production of components by additive manufacturing, such as laser-based additive manufacturing from CAD files, in which each layer is subjected in turn to selective heating, such as to above the melting temperature for the metal powder material, by focussed electromagnetic radiation providing selective melting, includes a housing defining a processing chamber in which a non-reactive or inert atmosphere is able to be maintained and, within the chamber, a system for the deposition of successive layers of powder material onto a print bed of the apparatus. The system has an elongate, powder material spreader member disposed in a first direction over and close to the print bed; a mounting member by which the spreader member is supported at an end for reversible lateral movement normal to the first direction between opposite sides of the print bed; and a powder material supply device above one side of the print bed and operable to discharge successive charges of the powder material and to spread a charge of the powder material over the upper surface in being moved from one to the other of the opposite sides.

Abstract: A powder re-coater apparatus for depositing powder layers in an AM installation includes an elongate, horizontally disposed recoating device mounted for sideways or lateral movement above a deposition surface of the installation under the action of a drive system. The recoating device has a housing defining an elongate chamber for holding powder, a dispensing opening along a base of the housing, and a metering member extending within the chamber, along the opening and operable to provide a controlled flow of powder through the opening during lateral movement of the recoating device to deposit a coating over the deposition surface. The apparatus further includes an elongate powder spreader device parallel to the recoating device and mounted for sideways or lateral movement closely juxtaposed to the surface. The spreader device is operable to spread powder from regions of excess thickness in a coating to ensure each coating is of uniform thickness.

Abstract: An additive manufacturing installation has a main housing with an upper part containing a process chamber and a lower part containing a build housing defining an open topped build chamber and containing a build platform in the build chamber, the lower part of the housing having an access opening spaced laterally from the build chamber and an access panel secured over the access opening. A powder dispensing system enables deposition of successive layers of a heat fusible powder over a build plane across the process chamber, adjacent to the build chamber. A directed beam energy source in the upper part of the main housing is operable in a build cycle to selectively scan and thereby selectively sinter or melt powder in a respective defined area of each of successive powder layers. An adjustment device in the build chamber is operable during the build cycle to lower the build platform in the build chamber from an upper position in which an upper surface of the build platform is at or adjacent to the build plane. A holding device is operable to release the build housing, with completion of the build cycle, from a position in which it is retained during the build cycle. With the build chamber released by the holding device and with the access panel moved to open the access opening, a drive system is operable to move the build chamber laterally through the access opening to a position outside the main housing, beyond the access opening.

Abstract: A glove box machine for recovery of unfused powder from a build assembly removed from an SLM installation after completion of a build cycle, comprising a housing (12) with a volume defined by at two parts (22, 24) with a support device (32) adjustably mounted in relation to one housing part (22). The housing parts are relatively movable for the build assembly to be received within the volume and secured by a build plate (28) of the assembly on the support device. One housing part has at two glove ports with a fitted glove (40) whereby the hands of an operator can be inserted to perform within the housing tasks required for recovery of the unfused powder. The support device is movable to enable adjustment of the orientation of the build assembly to facilitate powder recovery from the build assembly.

The system further includes an eduction housing mountable at a second location of the processing chamber, having an inlet opening and an outlet port to enable gas to be drawn from the processing chamber, into the eduction housing, for discharge from the outlet port.
