Abstract:
A fifth wheel hitch assembly includes a fifth wheel hitch plate having a body portion and a pair of extensions extending outwardly from the body portion, wherein the extensions cooperate to form a throat therebetween, a locking arrangement moveable between an unlocked position where a kingpin may be moved into and out of the throat, and a locked position where the kingpin is prevented from being removed from within the throat, and a sensor arrangement that includes at least one sensor located within at least one component of the locking arrangement, wherein the at least one sensor includes an accelerometer configured to sense vibrational movement of the at least one component of the locking arrangement.
Abstract:
A kingpin assembly comprises a housing having a recess located therein, a kingpin having at least a portion located within the recess of the housing, a coupler member operably coupled to the kingpin, and a collet member engaging the housing and the kingpin, and engaging the coupler member such that an uncoupling of the coupler member from the kingpin at least partially disengages the collet member from the kingpin.
Abstract:
Abstract:
A remote control locking system (10) for locking a trailer to a truck by locking a mechanism that secures the turck to the trailer. The system (10) may include a remotely located transmitter (132) adapted to transmit a control signal (24). A receiving unit (26) on the truck is adapted to receive the control signal (24). An actuator is coupled to the receiving unit (26) and to the mechanism for selectively inhibiting movement of the mechanism depending on information relayed by the control signal (24).
Abstract:
Embodiments generally relate to a trailer safety system for monitoring a vehicle and a trailer, the system comprising a kingpin sensor positioned on the turntable, the kingpin sensor being configured to detect the presence of a kingpin received by the turntable; a locking sensor positioned on the turntable, the locking sensor being configured to detect an open position and a closed position of a locking system of the turntable; a control unit, the control unit being configured to receive output signals from the kingpin sensor and the locking sensor, and to determine whether safe coupling has been achieved based on the output signals; and a brake release component, controlled by the control unit, wherein the brake release component is configured to restrict movement of at least one of the vehicle and the trailer until safe coupling is achieved, by restricting the release of at least one brake of the at least one trailer. Safe coupling is determined to be achieved when the locking sensor detects a closed position of the locking system after the kingpin sensor detects the presence of a kingpin.
Abstract:
Embodiments generally relate to a trailer safety system for monitoring a vehicle and at least one trailer. The system comprises at least one sensor positioned on a turntable of the vehicle, the sensor being configured to detect the presence of a portion of a first trailer in proximity to the turntable; a first connection component configured to couple to the circuitry of the first trailer and allow control of at least one component of the first trailer; and a control unit. The control unit is configured to receive output signals from the at least one sensor and the first connection component; determine, from the received signals, whether the first trailer has been correctly coupled to the turntable; and generate an alert when it is determined that correct coupling has not occurred.
Abstract:
A safety latch is mounted in the keyhole of a fifth wheel coupling for joining the sections of an articulated vehicle. The safety latch is movable from an inactive position permitting the kingpin to move through the slot and into the aperture to an active position blocking the keyhole slot thereby preventing movement of the kingpin through the keyhole slot when the sections are coupled together.
Abstract:
A jaw for fifth wheel hitch assembly includes a jaw body (14) having a stepped bearing surface (24). A jaw assembly (12) for a fifth wheel hitch assembly includes a jaw body (14), a control handle (16) and a connecting link (18) where the connecting link (18) is pivotally connected to the control handle (16) on the jaw body (14). A fifth wheel hitch assembly includes a base assembly for mounting to a towing vehicle, a head assembly carried on the base assembly and a jaw assembly (12) carried on the head assembly.
Abstract:
A novel interconnection of the jaw (42), wedge (26) and operating handle (21) in a fifth wheel (11) facilitates the provision of an indicator (58) on a secondary locking mechanism which further insures the security of the system. In the invention, the jaw (42) is connected to the operating handle (21) by a pivoting timing lever (31) which pivots off a pin (41) on the jaw (42) such that the jaw (42) remains engaged with the fifth wheel (11) until the wedge (26) is substantially removed from engagement with the jaw (42). In cooperation with the primary locking mechanism, a secondary lock is provided at the end of the operating handle (21) such that a pawl arrangement (51) engages a stop (63) on the fifth wheel assembly (11) until positively released by the operator. The pawl arrangement (51) further has a mechanical indicator (58) which extends beyond the fifth wheel assembly (11) and allows the operator to determine whether the king pin (16) is engaged and the secondary lock is activated.
